This is a great build, been following along. No to get off track, but flatheadtommy your post of the Miller/Ford pictures shows what looks like the steering shaft. I have not seen that picture before. Isn't that the part that failed during the race?

You are right, 2 things occurred 1st the u-joint on the column was right next to the exhaust manifold and that seized up and then the Miller design steering box also locked up from the high heat. the whole car was purely a work of art.

  3. I worked on the 35 Miller Ford that is at the Henry Ford Museum when I was an intern years ago. I prepped if for Pebble Beach for the 100th anniversary of Ford racing display. All the aluminum wings over the suspension were cracked on that car and held together with straps and screws. Story was that particular car was given by Henry Ford to the head of the Packard Motor Company after the failure at indy (it was one of the cars that did not qualify) to use as his street car. Could you imagine driving an indy car on the street every day today?

DAMN YOU!!!!!! After going thru your thread I,m hooked. Years ago I drug home a 22/23 dodge cowl And I have a few buddies that have 41/48 fenders. I hate to steal your Idea but I,m going to. I think A 40s era dodge rear fender would look great but I dont have any laying around nor do I know where any are. My motor choice at this point will be a Flathead 6 out of My Rambler wagon with a 3 speed overdrive IMG_1732.JPG IMG_1735.JPG IMG_1737.JPG DSC02936.JPG

onekoolkat1950 if this is the gas door lid you need let me know. I think this is from a 46 parts vehicle I had. Don't ask me why I still have it but it was in a box in the shop. Your welcome to it if you want it for the cost of shipping. PM your address if you want it and I can get a shipping cost.

Steve Shepard came over the other night and gave me a crash course in hammer/flow forming. Tonight I tried my hand at it . [IMG] [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    Word.
Looks awesome! Can you give a cliff notes on the hammer & flow technique for the hood sides? What does the weld bead do?

My guess would be that the weld is fixing a tear from the forming process.

Could be. To me, it looks like the bead is laid down first and then the forming happens.

I really want to learn metal forming and other old timey strategies.

Yup. The welds are to repair where the metal fatigued and split also where I screwed the form to it.
Pretty simple stuff. Make a template in wood , screw and clamp the metal to it and then beat the metal into the form with a rivet gun or mallets. It took some fine tuning after with a hammer and a couple different dollys. They are not perfect but close enough for polyester.

Hey Ray, The old-timer said my main bearings are pounded out, but Gee look - my brakes are just like new ! Brakes are for sissies ! the only pedals you need to know about are the gas and clutch. ' 009f86095dbb1e3d9e36c4c482c37b76.jpg Elbows Up '
