I just got the car home, and I am so stoked to get to be the next caretaker of this car. I have known about this car for 46 years, but never laid eyes on it till last week. The story goes like this; I worked with the man who built this. He purchased the car in 1960. By 1961, he had it running, in 1962, he painted it with 25 or so coats of black lacquer and him and his brother upholstered it in red and white naugahyde in the same year. He continued to tinker with the car, but never take it out. Somewhere along the line, it got a 401 nailhead with 2- 4s, and a lincoln zephyr floor shift trans. The man passed away about 7 yrs. ago, so some of the story is from the son. It hasn't been started in at least 2 years, and the son says it hasn't been out of the subdivision since 1962! It has no bondo or bodywork that I can see, and the decklid handle was leaded in when it was removed. Plans are to get it running, free up the brakes, and try to leave it as it has always been. I haven't even unloaded it yet,so here are a couple teaser photos. Enjoy 00303_vKF9ZZ2iit_600x450.jpg 00303_9UNzz1ZBc2g_600x450.jpg 00V0V_jh6VPa8BvU5_600x450.jpg

It was the first house in the subdivision in 1960. I think he paid about 18,000. It just sold for 157,000!Fender welt is chrome!

Great car, a real time capsule. Will have to take some care in getting those flaming skull stickers off the firewall, otherwise looks top notch!

This is like a 'gift'...from the '39 gods! It's as though he was building/finishing it for you.

My bud Teddy DeMello bought a semi-finished '40 Deluxe Coupe from a 'wholesaler'...1960. Teddy totaled his '53 Studee a year later, meanwhile his black '40 Coupe (painted in '58 by Joe... The guy that did the fabulous '57 Chrysler for Cliff Inman: can Never remember his name!) Nitrocellulose black lacquer...
    Teddy's '40 had white tuck-and-roll, just like yours, but white...Red piping, I wanted to SCREAM...Teddy's '40 had a '56 Buick, '39 box, Crower U-Fab with four 97s.
Your car is like...one of a 2 car 'set', on "How to do the best thing"! Everything here is RIGHT!

Teddy's '40 had a Columbia overdrive, which 'gave up the ghost'...I replaced it with a 3.54 std. rear, he was weary of the '40, asked if I wanted it.
I did. I paid it off slowly, $20 here, $50 there...FINALLY, $100 and it was done! 'Trusting Ted' had signed over the pink, and it was registered to me at the beginning...
Teddy was like an older brother, into his studies at school, but a super assistant to me in our endeavors.
We did 4 cars, no 'frame-ups', but chassis work and stance...the right wheels & tires, etc.
I have a funny story about this damned '40, and the day it tried to eat me all up!
    Another time...I've confessed enough.
This car has grabbed me. You guys could tell.......:rolleyes:

The stickers were his sons touch. I think they will be among the first to go. Also the shift knob. I got the chrome piston knob that originally was on it.

VERY Cool, love the Olds steering wheel!
Looks to be a very nicely done Hot Rod.
I'm sure you're proud to be the "caretaker" of such a nice piece of little known or seen history.
