Hi everyone, I was recently given a 327 that had been sitting in a barn for the past few years after it had been pulled. I believe it was originally in an old farm truck, but I'm not too sure. The plan is to tear it down, rebuild it, and find something to put it in. If anyone can help ID this engine, I'd appreciate it! 3858174 FII04YW
The book says car or truck 327. That looks like possibly a governor below the carb. May just be a manual choke assy. Pull a valvecover and see what casting # and date the heads are. How about a few more pictures. Yeah the righthand clutch deal makes me think of industrial too Saltflats. Lippy
I had the same hyd clutch setup with a Wilwood master cyl on my avatar truck minus the lower dust cover.....worked well
Probably because it is from a truck or some such thing it is a two barrel. A friend had a 210 horse 2 bbl/3 spd '67 Camaro and to the best of my knowledge the 210 was the first 2bbl 327. All 327/250 horse and up from '62 'till the end of 327 production were 4bbl or FI. It has a short water pump but could they have used those on the bigger trucks later than '67? Like salt flats pointed out the fork is on the passenger side and the slave is still there too. I was going to post the above but then I found more info- YW is a 185 horse '64-'66 327 from a C60 truck.
Yesterday I removed the bell housing, clutch, and flywheel (stamped 3738585) and I also powerwashed all the dirt and oily sludge off the engine. Here's a few more pictures. I'll try and get a valve cover off later today.
Yep, for an oversized filter no doubt. Another reason to suspect industrial/agri/marine. & it's green! Might be from the rare JD Competition (off road use only) Combine! Whatever it is, I like a good mystery, carry on!
'68 or '69 because of the closed off breather tube and the PCV valve setup, would be my guess. Looks like it's painted GM Alpine green possibly from a GM school bus or large truck. KK
Yeah that oil filter deal is weird. Takes a big ass filter like a tractor. Looks like the right head is a late model? at least later than a 327? Looks like a 350 head that wasn't drilled! It's a weird one alright. Lippy
Green 327 engines were found on '62, '65 and '66 trucks. Right side clutch forks were hydraulic units, found on '60 to '62 trucks. So, you probably have a '62 327 truck engine.
This is out of a C50 or bigger .Notice the large diameter clutch requiring the adapter plate for the bell housing? This is why the radiator hoses aren't like what you have seen in automobiles.....
The above post I wrote should have included the phrase that the green 327 was in the medium duty trucks, such as the 40, 50 60 series. If I recall correctly, they were known as the "Apache" and the "Viking" models.
Update! Here are the codes for the heads: 3795896 (drivers side) and 3774684 (passenger side). More pics as well!
Even the 250hp 4v 327's had the small heads. #896 is a typical late 1.72 head casting number. The other head was probably put on at some point when there was a problem with the original #896 head. Kinda funny that it's also alpine green, but maybe it came off another combine...
I have 2 sets of those double bar marked heads out in the shed.Both sets are 76cc chamber with 1.72 and 1.5 valves.I dont know what they came on.
YW 66-68 C60-M60-S60 327 with manual transmission casting date code on the back of the block, above the bellhousing, would tell you which year, if it matters
