Art & Inspiration Realistic car related movies.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Feb 24, 2017.

  1. There's been threads about movies with car related errors, and yeah those errors drive me nuts at times and at other times make me laugh.
But this thread is for the most realistic movies with cars you have seen? As in the movie is focused from 1962, and true to the movie there are no vehicles from newer than 62. Or the scenes with missing hubcaps and damaged fenders, and they STAY true and don't fix the dents or add hubcaps for the next cut etc..... most realistic only please. And I know as true car people we notice all those small details.

  2. The original 'Gone in Sixty Seconds'...

  6. The drag racing sequences in American Graffiti 2 were pretty good. Sure, there are some goofs and it was hoked up a little, but it still had the essence of mid 60's drag racing. At least the way I remember it. George Lucas was also a teenager in the 60's ( like me ), and from what I understand, a BIG fan of the drags. I think they got it right.

LeMans and Grand Prix? I always hated the Hollywood stuff where Corvettes or even motorcycles made VW bug noises when they accelerated away at the end of a scene. Gary

Pixar's "Cars" get's my vote. I mean setting aside that the cars talk and pump their own gas; I was impressed when Doc Hudson has is fender skirts removed for racing. That was a tiny detail that I'm sure no one noticed, but if you know how a Hudson fender skirt works, you should appreciate someone at Pixar took the care to make that detail right.

I like the scene in Jersey Boys when the Studebaker wheelies with the safe in the trunk, or the end of Grease when the car flies away at the end. :p

  15. Grand Prix has some of the greatest speed sequenced ever filmed. It was the real thing then, no CGI, no camera tricks. Just a camera strapped on a mid 60's Formula 1 car and all out hauling ass!
James Garner does real driving too.
If you have never seen it, GET THIS MOVIE!!!

The only problem with GP was the fact that the actors drove tarted up F3 cars with fake injectors and headers. The actual race footage was brilliant, especially the stuff from Spa in the rain.

Ha ha, I get it. Also when doc Hudson speeds away in one of the scenes it sounds like a Hudson, not a v8 or four cylinder.

Bullitt has the issues that the OP talked about--a total lack of continuity in the chase sequence.

For the 2012-2013 season the was a cable drama filmed in Miami called Magic City about casino / mobster life circa 1959-1960. Many of the vehicles supplied were from locals and they strived to keep them correct.

Le Mans is awesome. McQueen put a huge amount of effort into getting it right. After the race he leased a pair of 512 Ferraris from Scuderia Fillipinetti and painted them to match the factory cars to shoot the pit sequences with the actors. This was a bit more involved than it appears on the surface as each of the 4 Ferrari team cars had a different combination of white painted spoilers/dive planes etc so that they were easier to identify at night. McQueen's guys did the job with paint brushes in a building near the track and got the combinations right.
The only thing that jars is when one of the "Porsches" crashes and as the tail is ripped off you can see a round chrome air cleaner on the Chevy engine in what was actually a rebodied Lola T 70--I guess that it would have been a bit much to deliberately crash a real 917. :)

Mad Max, Christine, California Kid, Pit Stop (rare), The Gumball Rally, Greased Lightning, Heart Like A Wheel, Grand Prix, Winning, The Last American Hero, The Love Bug, Speed Racer, Hooper, Smokey and the Bandit, Vanishing Point, Wild Wheels, The Choppers, American Graffiti, Gone in Sixty Seconds and the Junkman (both Halicki movies). Hell's Angels '69 is one of my favorites! Most Elvis movies have great cars in them. "Clambake" has the '59 Corvette Stingray (in red) now valued at over 15 million!!
Just a few out of my collection.

  24. ALL movies require a willing suspension of disbelief to one extent or another. It's the nature of the the medium. I have a friend who complains about every nitpicky thing possible in movies, my question is WHY?
Most of the movies being posted are pretty good enjoyable flicks, nothing is perfect and things in movies cost money.
Lack of continuity is common in all flicks, I LOVED Bullit when I first saw it and still do! It's ONLY because of endless repetition on TV that all these "mistakes" are even noticeable.
The French Connection has one bad ass car chase! Surprised nobody mentioned it!

Grand Prix is one of the best car movies ever. Frankenheimer was a Ferrari nut and owner. He had lots of clout with Enzo and the factory. Every time I see James Garner hit 175mph on the banks of the Monza track, it makes my ass pucker up. Sorry TMI

I guess Ivo did the dragster driving.
Some pretty long ET's for Shirley in the movie!!! More drama and suspense!
Drag racing just doesn't translate well to TV or film, but they did pretty good in this one.

I seem to remember the Charger losing the same hubcap 2 or 3 times.
Not nitpik'n Gary, just enjoying the movie again in my head.
The other stuff in there is not that entertaining today!
