These two jackets represent clubs in Pocatello ID. that were important in the early years of hot rods and drag racing and I was fortunate to inherit them....

 

FlatheadTommy I have to ask is the red Westboro jacket from Westboro speedway on Rt 9 in Westboro? I lived not more than 2 miles from where that was for 30 years and on a Sat. night in the summer with the windows open on the house you could hear the small blocks winding out! Wow did that bring back some memories!

 

Gordon, yes it is, and when the Midgets were running you could smell the Methenol

 

I lived just down the street from where it used to be in back of a place called Harrys, a little diner/dive that had awesome seafood! I remember going to the speedway to see the Joey Chitwood thrill drivers! Man what memories! Thanks!

I see your in Tyngsboro. I also lived in Westford for a number of years.

 

I won this one, it's a size 36, somehow after over the last 52 years, it doesn't fit me anymore !

 

Marty, my jackets don't fit me either, but they look just as good hanging there !

 

Here's my small collection.

The first NASH coat I've had forever, it was NOS when I got it. I think it's a serviceman coat.

The OILZUM was a gift from our very own flatheadtommy.. it's a treasured item, Tommy knew I was a crazy about anything Oilzum.


The blue Champion jacket was a gift from Bob Welch, it was his late brothers pit jacket. Dave and Bob were both fixtures and top condensers on the local stock car circuit. Both fantastic guys that would talk and talk about he old racing days.

The cam2 jacket was a gift from my old boss Vin, he raced his Nova called miss sunshine at New England Dragway in the 70's and was a local Cam2 dealer.

The Ford wool baseball shirt is from the 1940`s .The WYNNS jacket is a 1962 class winner. I have a CRAGAR 200 MPH Club jacket, a couple more WYNNS FRICTION PROOFING jackets, A KEITH BLACK Racing Engines and some more that I cant easily get to for pictures right now.

 

I can`t wait for KIWIKEV to see this thread. He will make us all drool.

 

How about when it's a bit to warm for a jacket, this belonged to the man himself.

 

Our car club jacket from 1971. A few of us were filmed (wearing our colors) in one of the San Rafael 4th street scenes in American Graffiti but got left on the cutting room floor! We did make the local paper, though. About 15 members strong.

It was a popular thing to be in a car club as they all wore cool jackets. The club names were unusual. The jackets were nice, baseball style with knit cuffs and collar, but at the time, most were made from wool. We wore our wool baseball jackets (sports teams, not a car club) and in the rain or foggy mist, they did not smell nice. I was reminded on a rainy day stroll, one day with a friend, (a girl who did not hold anything back) that my jacket smelled like a wet dog or wild animal. It was awkward.

That made the remainder of that jacket’s life to only go out on a sunny/overcast day. So, when ever we saw friends with their own car club jackets on a foggy/misty day, we stayed away from them. Ha!

Back in those early days, there was no such thing as fireproof racing clothes or protection gear. Some guys would wear their club jackets as their attire while at the drags. Walk around with the jackets on, get in the race car and drive… Others wore leather jackets, but those too, were street jackets that served as a race car jacket. We wore our Wynn’s Friction Proofing Jackets when we raced, hoping for some sponsorship of some kind. Did it protect while racing? Not when a massive gasoline fed fire melts the jacket right off your arm.
