Something Ive grown to appreciate is how beautiful the lines are on some of these cars. Subtle little embelishments and belt lines are everywhere and I think we have a tendency to look past that stuff when looking at them in real life. For a kick Im right in the middle of doing a 50s VW. It wasn't until I studied some pics just how much the German engineers gleaned from the late 30s and 40s American car designers. Fat fenders, running boards, headlight buckets ala 37 Ford, fast back styling...its amazing what you see in all these cars when you really look at them. Gives me a whole new appreciation.

  2. ...Ron,...most artists are their own worst critics;...we all see little things wrong with our work, but most others don't unless you point it out.
...I try to not post anything I'm not real happy with, but have from time to time....guess it all helps us keep improving .

Dang man! The markers where a good turn for
You! Huge improvement. Your in good company with the knit picking. I don't post 90% of the stuff I do because I know there was a flaw somewhere that I went back and fixed and for some reason in my minds eye it's still there.

    Your doing great.

Tip of the day for you since your trying your hand at chrome in color. Think of them as landscapes with a little distortion.

I mean that's what they are reflecting right? It's always helped me make more believable chrome

Yeah...im struggling a bit with the chrome as well as making tires look right and for some odd reason, making headlights that are aligned and don't look like Marty Feldman installed them. Thanks for the tips y'all.

Enjoyed the conversations between Rusty, Ron and Tim on being critical of your own work. I remember being told years ago that's a sign of growing in your skills. It's a good thing. Great work folks!

  14. I posted this under Traditional Hot Rods a couple of nights ago, but another HAMBer suggested it should be here in the Friday Art Show:

When my mom passed last year, at age 92, I was going through her stuff and stumbled across some sketches my dad had done when he was in high school. I'd never seen them, he'd never pulled them out, but that was the kind of guy he was; quiet, humble and rock solid. He went on to build a roadster (though not as elegant as the one here) and in 1939, at 17 years old, he managed to clock a time of 100.56 mph at Harper Dry Lake.

I agree, Tim. Depending on the shape of the object that is showing the reflection, it's just a distorted reflection, following the contour of the object it's reflected on. Here's a cutout of a oil painting that required quite a few different reflections. new stuff 007.jpg

  25. Outstanding job, Ron. I knew that car and driver as soon as I saw your sketch. A great tribute to a great hot rodder.

This is a work in progress, a couple more hours ought to do it, don't know if I'll get those hours in by the end of the weekend though.

  29. Wow what a great show.
    Thanks everyone for sharing.

I had a few Holden stampings left.
I thought one would look good as a coffee table for the shed.

    Here a WIP
