So I have done quite a bit of searching on google and some Buick websites but can't seem to exactly ID this straight 8 Buick engine I have. My Dad picked this complete motor up today at a salvage yard and I am trying to find out what year and model L8 it is. Here is the number I found on the machined block in front of the distributer: 69484734 Thanks in advance.
There should be a space between the first and second numbers or between the last two numbers with a dash or dot. The serial numbers that start with a 6 would be either a 51 or 52 (but no 9 as the second digit. Your last four digits would be for a 1950 with an automatic. Recheck the numbers carefully as there are only "9"s, as a second digit with a 4 as the first digit in 1948. If the number is in front of the distributor it came out of a 40 or 50 series
From the info I found, it looks to be a late 1952. YEAR SERIES DISPLACEMENT SERIAL NOS. START AT 1953 40 L-8 263 6950620-4
Forgot this with earlier post It could be from a 40 series by reference chart however starting serial is different. Looks to be an OEM style stamping http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_53_58.html
Hummm, so maybe it is a late 52' ??? Love this part of old cars, the mystery surrounding parts always intrigues me. Thanks for the help fellas.
Measure the length of the block at the head surface. That will quickly determine if it is a small series 248/263 or the bigger 320. There is an almost 4" difference in length between them. In the morning, I will do some research on the engine number. It is definitely '49 or later as it has the side engine mounts. Ray
