I've found that it works best to just keep an eye out for rigs running down the road or on car lots or in parking lots that have the color and shade of that color you want and note the make and model and go from there.
Henry posted the formula for Dana red or as it was known before they split "Nancy Dana Red" on here or on another board.
On another note I've seen some later model Ford pickups that have a red that should be real close to what you are looking for that isn't loaded with metallic.

Ask the paint store to see the fleet color book. All the reds are in a row.

For sure get the paint chips from your store's catalog and take them out in the sunlight.

  9. IMHO nobody beats the Italians when it comes to a deep red. In particular, early '90s Ducati red. Find a paint shop that is familiar with a 1991 Ducati red (it is NOT the same as later years, there is no standard "Ducati Red") and let them mix the paint for you.

Trivial anecdote. I was out for a ride one summer day years ago. Stopped for lunch and parked next to an older Corvette. When I came back out, there was a guy gazing at my bike (A 1991 Ducati 907ie). The lighting was just right and the bike was almost glowing. When I walked up the guy said "I thought I painted my 'vette red, but... damn..."

EDIT: Another aside... I needed some paintwork done on the aforementioned 907. I took it to the best guy I knew. When I picked it up he described the horrors of trying to match it. He had done a great job but as I was leaving he said "If you ever need more work done on that, take it somewhere else".

I'm not sure if he was kidding...

    Jaguar 'Regency' red
    '60-'67 VW 'Ruby' red
'58-'59 VW 'Garnet' red. Pretty sure 'Garnet' red is the color Jesse James painted his '32 Roadster.

I think his 32 was a Porsche color but I could be completely wrong.

This is a handy website to go through, you can choose make / model / years or just scroll through colors for everything

Curious as to what your putting it on. The fleet colors viewed in sunlight is good advice. Stay away from reds with orangey hue.

Blood red? If you were doing a Ford should it be blue? I've been told my blood is Ford blue;).
Seriously, I'm not real fond of picking colors off of chips. Sometimes it's hard to visualize what a color will be on a car looking at a 1x2 chip. Plus you can get lost when your looking at 100 different shades of red, all on little chips. I tell my customers to look for cars that have the color you like and try to find out what it is.

Don't have any codes, but here are some good samples......dark red/maroon. The tub is the most red, the other three are getting closer to a maroon color.

Another vote for BMW Imola Red, my avatar's color. Lots of import car mfgs offer both a light and dark red. Some Acura's I've seen have a very nice dark red. Gary

2012 Honda San Marino red. Its bc/cc but its non-metallic. I'd post a picture but it doesnt photograph well. Looks like ordinary bright red and its not. It's blood red like you just cut yourself deeply.

When you look at paint chips. Take the chips outside . you would be amazed at the difference. Over head lights don't give the true color.
Painted a Camaro with Porsche India red . Really nice. Candy apple red looks good when done right.

If you want a classic color, Candy Apple Red from a 60's Mustang I think it is color code "T"

If you want a more modern color, Ford Race Red from a late model Mustang

I'm no expert on colors, but Dana red isn't a dark blood red. It is a very red, red. A true rich red, but not a dark red. Dark reds are more of a red/maroon. Here is a pic of Henry Dana red.
