Projects So here we go on the 60 Comet project

  1. Yep, Jim knows :)

Raising the engine usually involves some Trans tunnel work.
It can mess with radiator to fan relationships too.
It's usually lots more work but if it needs to be done it's doable.

Ain't no more room in the tunnel to go up.

Raising the center-of-gravity on a car that has to make turns is of dubious merit.

Decided to hop on the motor tonight that came with the car, I say " Scrap". I checked the numbers and it turns out to be a 302 with the 289 inners, BUT after taking the heads off and seeing that it blew a head gasket at some point and someone just left it, there seems to be a SHIT TON OF RUST CHUNKS STUCK to the the side of the cylinder, and you can see ib the pic how the head is too. To build or NOT to rebuild? Is it buildable, I say no but what do you guys think, sleeve it or leave it? 20170125_175759.jpg 20170125_175814.jpg 20170125_175926.jpg

You need a good running engine and transmission. There was nothing about this one that made it rare or special.

I'd toss it, and find another one. You can go all the way to a 351W now, with no towers. Common stuff. Should not be all that hard to find a decent SBF, where they salt the roads.

what year is the sbf you have? I forget.

The reason I ask is that they changed stuff on the block in the mid 60s, so if it's an early engine, you can't even use it to mock up mounts

Going by the block casting numbers its a 68 -69 but now im considering going with a BB considering I have one in a boat I have and the other one for parts, so nit sure what im really going to do yet. More power, more fun? It is just being built to terrorize the streets only, haha.

you might as well put in a big block, since you're going to all the trouble to build the car.

460's can be bought cheap, stroker kits are quite reasonable, but man are they heavy, well over 700 lbs. with iron heads. I personally would go for the stroked Windsor, 393-408 kits are cheap, bolt on a set of aluminum heads should easily get you 450-500 hp or quick enough to get the nhra tech guy's attention to install a rollbar.

Really good friend of mine has a stroked 351w in his not H.A.M.B. friendly pinto drag car. It's a hand full. He goes easy with her to keep tech off his ass. And going easy she's running low 10s.....

What kind of trans you planning on? A big block with a c6 might be a bitch. However you seem to grasp the metal working thing. Ya can whip up a trans tunnel pretty easy.

My concerns, as always, will be adding excess weight to a lightweight car, being built with a high center-of-gravity.

If I use a piece of this sheet metal from a vw roof to weld in around where I screwed up cutting around the shock tower, will it make the car go slower then whatever I use for a motor, because it will have vw metal on it. Im getting cheap right now so I took it from another project I have going on, lol. Has great patina on it, haha. 20170127_175553.jpg

Got out today and made the patch panels for the flange and got it all spot welded in. A little glass work and it will look just like new. 20170128_125035.jpg 20170128_125044.jpg 20170128_142051.jpg 20170128_151056.jpg 20170128_171103.jpg

Just curious, why are you doing all that work to not fill in the hole, or clean up the hole to fit your new headers that you don't know what they are yet?

Maybe I just don't get as much of a thrill out of doing this type of work, as you do :)

Hmmm.....it might work, but it seems to me that it would make more sense to put the headers where they belong first, and THEN do the bodywork to make the hole pretty. After you know where the hole really wants to be. My guess is it wants to be back quite a ways.

20170125_161128.jpg Can someone please tell me, out of all these factory holes on the inside of the drivers side frame, which ones I will need to keep and also, should the stock steering box be used? It worked fine when it was in but should it be used for this project meaning turning ability and strenght or go with something different? Thanks

That train left the station long ago. Wait till he gets the blown, bored and stroked 460 in there. Then watch it turn a corner.

Which holes you might need will depend on all the parts you plan to put on the car. Do you know what engine you will use? what suspension? how you plan to run the brake lines? and wires?

The steering box selection might also depend on what suspension you use, and what engine you choose might affect that...Ford motors mostly have the distributor in front, which means the oil pump is in front, which means it has to have clearance for the pump in front (although there are rear sump pans, which still stick down pretty far in front). The exhaust might or might not be in the way of the steering box, too. You might be able to build headers that clear the steering box, or maybe not, it depends where the exhaust ports are on the engine that you choose.

In other words, by doing the bodywork first, you are putting the cart in front of the horse (to use a bad analogy).

Maybe you ought to slow down on doing the stuff you know how to do, and start doing the hard part, which for you is probably figuring out the mechanicals.

Keep all of the holes. You can weld them up later.

Drill out your bumper bracket holes, too.
