Technical Tig Welder Questions

I have a Miller Diversion 180, do you guy's know if the WP17 torch that comes with the welder can be changed out to a smaller WP9 torch for smaller sheet metal welds?
I was told that you need to change the existing hose to a new smaller flex hose with a new WP9 torch to make this happen, can anyone verify this?

You shouldn't need a smaller torch you can get different collets for the 17. I have collets for my wp17 from .040" up to an 1/8". I use the 1/16" tungsten for must of my welding but use .040" tungsten and a diffuser for the gas and weld sheet metal all the time.

These are your options instead of a torch change unless you really want a smaller torch

 

There are obvious needs for different size torches but I have found a 17 torch with stubby gas lens and 3/32" 2% Lanthanated Tungsten electrode will weld anything in my shop. A short back cap is handy too. I use a Lincoln Precision TIG 225.

Can somebody explain the purpose and uses of the gas lens cap. I don't know much about them.

 

A gas lens is supposed to concentrate the gas flow better than a regular cup setup, and I think they do. Sized correctly, they allow more tungsten stickout for getting into the tubing joints better.

 

A gas lens mixes the gas flow better so you can use less flow for the same coverage. Less flow= saving $.

 

Think of a gas lens, like the diffuser on your kitchen faucet. Without the diffuser, the water comes out sort of irratic and un controlled. Put the little screened diffuser on the faucet and you get a nice smooth stream of water that is controlled and goes where you want it. Same with the gas lens and your gas flow.

Did a search and thought id just post my question here. I bought this stuff as a lot with some other tools . I know nothing about TIG stuff .What kind of power source do i need to make this stuff usable?

 

That Miller foot pedal is the same as we use here at the school and is equipped with the plug that is a 14 pin connector that hooks onto the front of a machine like the XMT350 Inverter.
The plug on the Tig torch also fits that type of machine. (Dinse style plug)
It is an industrial machine as is the torch and remote foot pedal you have.
A fairly expensive inverter.
I'm not sure if what you have can be made to work with any of the more inexpensive home style machines.

The torch and remote could also be made to work on the Dynasty line of Tig machines, the smallest is the Dynasty 210 we also have them here at the school.
They are also an industrial capable machine and a bit expensive for a home machine.

I use Thoriated and a Miller but that is all I use for just about everything. If the weld needs to be tiny I undercut the tungsten when I sharpen it.

I changed out the torch on my Diversion 165 to a smaller one... was pretty easy
