  13. Larry is correct. The original Powell's car (Known as the Golden Angle) was involved in a crash on the return road at Ohio Valley Dragway. Ed Payne, the then owner of the car was testing a new blown motor. The reason he was testing on the return road was because the track was having new striping painted on it that day. After several passes on the return road, the car was making its last pass and the front axle collapsed. As the car rolled several times, Ed was thrown out, more than likely not wearing his seat belt. The police investigation showed that a weld broke where the straight axle had been narrowed and then chromed.

Not anywhere near as popular as some of these greats of the day but part of Anglia drag racing history is a '48 Anglia "Miss Twist" my dad built with Big Ed Kowalski back in '59/60. It didn't run Gas or even Altered but Competition class as they mounted the motor where the front seat would normally be!!! This is the only photo known to exist. I'm currently building a period correct recreation to honor my dad. Even sourced a steel three slot grill from none other than Dean Kirsten author of the article that kicked off this thread. Crazy small world!

Anyone remember this old Anglia drag car ? Maybe from the mid west.
Nose art reads “ CUPIDS QUIVER “
Upper quarter panel on each side reads “ Rick Sha “ (?) or “ Shaw “
Trunk writing reads ( what we can make out ) ….
    “ Custom paint “
    “ MIKE ( WOLFMAN )
    and “ GO - PHER “

My friend's the Cali Bros. built this car around 64/65, had a injected SBC and Vitar hydro. I found them a injected 426 hemi and torqueflite in 67/68 and they ran the car that way for a while. Cali & mcCarthy picture is at NY National speedway when it was for sale. Last picture in person who wound up with it, they sold it and car disappeared. Supposedly in the north east yet. Both the Cali Bros are gone now and I have been looking for car for the past 8 years now. Anybody Know of it ?

King Kong was sold and turned into Pacini Brothers' Showdown. showdown.jpg

  25. That was in '68. They sold it in '76 to Paul Thompson of New York who made a Street Rod out of it. in 77 Chris O'Conner of Pomona got and in 79 he sold it to Carlos & Mary Cedeno. In 84 he sold it to Jack Leonard but in '87 got it back. Carlos is the one who has restored it to the King Kong livery (although the color has always looked a little off to me). And of course this is the famous Showdown picture when it puked it's trans at American Dragway

All the time, he is doing a 327 for me right now. Their shop is on the LI expressway service road exit 56.

There has been a lot of talk about roll cages in these cars.To share some info my prefect has a hoop behind the plastic seat and a bar from above the driver to the frame at the front of the passenger door.It is as raced in 59-60.This is an all steal car that I am slowly putting back together. You can see where the frame has "winked" in between the ladder bar front attachment point and spring perch on the passenger side. Also huge thanks to Dean for parts I spent years trying to find!

The Lutz and Lundberg Anglia was destroyed when one of the cast front spindles broke causing the car to roll.
