So glad I got to see at least some of one of the greatest eras in drag racing. Thanks to all for sharing the photographs and stories. I can almost hear those cars now. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
After digging in old boxes, found some pictures. The 56 Chevy 2 dr, is our first Jr stock car, plain white, and another pix after we got it lettered. (We repainted it the next year white with silver strips, and different black and chrome lettering....didn't like the lettering on the previous year's car and the class had changed anyway.) The other pix is the 56 Nomad I described in post's a couple of pages previously. Pretty much built them both in the garage and driveway. Did all the body work, and mechanical. (except paint, and engine machine work) The previous pix's on this page of nationaly competitive Jr stockers is very very cool. Saw many of them at the 66 Nationals. We went as spectators. Wasn't the Jenkins Nova all white at the 66 Nationals? I remember it that way...but it's a long time ago. .......no... pretty sure it was red on the sides and red stripes (I just realized I'm listed under two names ...Shain & sstk100) Is there some way to combine them?
Isn't the Monster Mash car, the car where it was discovered (rumored) much later that the body was actually moved back on the frame? The rear quarter's had the wheel wells moved to fit the body shift to the rear. Sure looks like it in some of the pix, the front wheel is up in the front of the wheel well. ....?
Sad Note: Phila Jr. Stock racer F. A. Di Condina aka "Squeak" passed away today He & his late brother Tony campaigned 57 Chev wagon 270 hp F/S "Tiny Tantrum" out of Germantown in the late 60s. "Squeak" was a real tuner and prepared some record holders in his day. We will miss the "Green Street Garlits"
I'm a student of the later Jenkins era, wasn't there quite yet in the early years. I'm pretty sure the red and white 66 deuce was #2, actually a 67 refitted with a 66 nose. The white 66 was wrecked, not sure where. Yea, I'm a fan.
This was actually one of the more common "tricks" used by the Tr-Five Chevrolet racers, and was fairly easy to do. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
I found this article on Bill Jenkins. A good read albeit too short. http://www.superchevy.com/features/sucp-1208-an-affectionate-tribute-to-william-tyler-jenkins/
Todd553, beautiful Pontiac. Best of luck with the project. be sure to keep us updated on the progress!
Beautiful car. My dad had a 4-dr. 1957 Pontiac Chieftain with the same paint except reversed scheme, i.e., green body paint w/white rocket (or whatever it's called) on its side. Car was stolen one very early Monday morning from our driveway in May/June of 1969. My dad replaced it with a white & green 1958 Pontiac Chieftain later that week.
