Seen a few Griffiths' over the years in magazines, never actually in person though.
Loudbang, even though the 65 Sunbeam Tiger was only a 260, I'd bet it would be a close second to your Griffith/Cobra analogy. Never drove one but as a kid I had the opportunity to ride in a Tiger that belonged to my friends older brother and I'll never forget it.

  7. DDD, I also rode in a tiger when I was a young kid. Was my friends fathers car. The tigers were a quick little car. What a rush at the age of 9.

A kid in town a few years older than me bought a Griffith brand new in 65/66...He always drove it like he stole it, could hear him coming with enough time to run out and watch him make a right turn through a stop sign at about fifty; sorta dumb...Last I knew he still has it but think its in FL now same blue as in pic..
[IMG] By the early 70's there were at least six around here in CT..I spent the better part of a day in the engine bay of one that a friend of mine bought fixing the frame that had been sabotaged ..Frames were made of round tubing and brazed together, tubing , suspension brackets et all..Car body was fiberglass and car weighed about 1850 and I think my Crosley has a longer wheelbase than the early ones..Later years they lengthened the car/wheelbase six inches..

Well, kinda. This is actually the infamous Ken Miles "fliptop" lightweight car, it was powered by a mega exotic experimental all-aluminum 390. The body was like no other Cobra, thinner aluminum, and as you can see in the photo, a flip front end and tail. It was a very trick, exotic, one-off race car. You will also notice it didn't have the louvers behind the front wheels like most Cobras. This car was built in the summer of '63, in the run-up to Nassau SpeedWeeks in Dec. of '63, so technically, it is the first FE powered Cobra, but didnt really bear any resemblance to what later became the 427 Cobra, and didn't have a 427 in it.
Where the confusion arises is that Ken Miles was also DIRECTLY involved in the actual prototype 427 car, which was built from a production line 289 car after they got back from Nassau Speed Weeks in December of '63. The flip-top 390 car was built expressly for Nassau Speed Weeks to take on the factory backed Corvette Gran Sports.
Oddly enough the 390 flip-top car retired at Nassau with suspension failure, and Ken Miles, cracked up the actual 427 prototype car that followed it at Sebring during practice early in '64.

I know this is just me, and I am an elitist prick and a total kill-joy, but I can't help but chuckle when I see someone do the v belt drive, the generator, the t-bird valve covers, and then top it off with the HAMB pista de restistance, the ever popular "traditional" edelbrock afb...

A summit carb. if you really have to ask, I know damn well you won't understand the explanation. ;) If you DONT really have to ask, well then, go poke a rabid dog with a stick, you'll get more bang for your buck...;) me? I'm gonna sign off on this before it turns into another HAMB clusterfuck, and go do something useful with my time...like watch "I Love Lucy" re-runs...

Is this the episode that elicited the comment about being able to hit the only tree in the middle of an eighty acre field?

Ok to get back on track just for DDDenny Westlake day.

    The remaining fords first

1967 Gurney Westlake engine used by Gurney to evaluate the newly cast heads. SBF 305 CID HP 448
    read the story here: http://www.wrljet.com/fordv8/gurney.html

    1967 Gurney-Weslake 305.jpg

Argentina Y block story. They were STILL being used there in the late 70's the whole story is here:
    http://www.curbsideclassic.com/cc-g...s-a-high-performance-second-act-in-argentina/

The westlake heads and intake.. These heads are obviously based on the English Gurney-Weslake heads made for the Windsor, or adapted from them. I spent way too much time trying to unravel how these heads ended up being made in Argentina, cast in both aluminum and iron, and yet nobody seems to know the full story. But here they are, and there’s several sets of these still kicking around, like this fully restored engine here. This is the ultimate Y-Block; or is it?

The Plymouth Indy Heads. Read the rest of the story here:
