Technical Chopping the 35 five window

Hey guys,

So my 35 will be getting a little trim off the top pretty soon. My question is does anybody have any links or progress photos of a chop?

It seems like this is a chop that can go wrong super fast. From what I've read these coupes need a "slant" chop. I can't really find any info about those. Can someone explain what that means or show photos of one compared with a straight chop?

Also I can't seem to find the link to part 2 of Marcel's chop in the street rodders article. Anyone know where I can find it?

Any help or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

This is also not a debate if I should chop it or not. I just want to learn more about them and I'll decide what I'll do with my 35, cool?


Here's a photo of a chop I feel is absolutely perfect!!! Does anyone have any more photos of this 36? Anyone know who owns it?

 

Slant chop WHICH DIRECTION? Are you building a hot rod or a custom? If you don't know the answer to either of these questions, you have some thinkin to do.

 

Going the custom route

 

Be sure to drive/ride in a chopped one before you get out the saw. That is a good looking car the way it is.

Leave it be. they look bitchen just the way they are. 35-36 are so nice and round and when you chop them they tend to look to flat on top. Sorry just my two cents.

I don't know how to link posts but if you look for Miss scarlet, kipper chopped his 5 window and its perfect. Its how I'm going to chop mine. Just do a search for it. Plenty of pics.

My estimation is chopping a 35-40 Ford ruins the proportions of the car. Not all cars need to be chopped.

Want the perfect chop?
Study the original 1935-36 Ford sales brochures and artists interpretation of the 5 Windows.
You'll want them in your hands, not a skewed picture of a picture.

 

Where can you purchase them?

 

I appreciate the info fellas, but like I said with no disrespect it's my car and I think they look better with a little off the top if done the right way.

 

Try the book Chopping Tops by Larry O'Toole, it has a great chapter on performing a step by step chop on a 36 five window

If you paint it a dark color it might look chopped.

Looks good. They split the roof it looks like. From what I've read people say not to do that because it gets too flat and loses the shape. I think it looks pretty good.

 

True, but that is not slanted like you were wondering about. That's more of a hot rod chop instead of a custom chop. Also, the chop isn't drastic so the proportions stay reasonable.

 

I think the biggest issue chopping a 35-36 is the rear quarter Windows get goofy.
This is really neat.

Did a little Photoshopping of my 35. This is what I'm going for.

I for one will be watching with interest.

 

Let it be, that's too nice a car to cut up. Better investment would be a hopped up flattie with a nice Rake. Certain cars were perfect from the factory. 35-40 Fords being one of them.

 

It's not my car and I love chopped cars, but I wouldn't chop that one. It's too nice.
