I am liking the old school hand cut ones the best....Everyone has the press style and ya just don't see the hand cut ones that much so that sets it apart from all the others.....COOL BEANS right there.

 

Im working on getting the roof insert roughed in with the English wheel. Need to dial in the edges,trim, and then 7 rows of louvers.

Got the roof insert edges fitted into the tack strip edge. Going to DA the whole thing with 80 grit then start my louver layout

I want to make a full bare aluminum hood for this one and I've been going back and forth with some ideas. I would like to try to do something a little out of the ordinary with this as everything has been done so many times before. Thinking I might do a 3-piece hood with a larger top section that extends down into smaller side pieces. When I louver everything I'll have the rows tie in one panel to the other. I did a quick sketch I'm no Picasso. Haha

Very nice workmanship on the top incert. It is fit to a tea....This is not easy to do as I have made one for my 3 window and it did not look this dam good. I covered mine with hartz material.

There have been many of these done, the problem is some look like the guy just didn't want to pay the "professional" price and the end result showed. I'm sure this is not the case here because I've seen your work.
One problem I've seen is the way the line of the formed body contour is thrown off by the lower seperation point of the hood sides. This may not be an issue for you, but I just can't warm up to the look.
This channeled car has what (I think) you are proposing. It was built about 1947 by Malcolm Schutt.

 

I agree DDDENNY. Disrupting the flow of the body reveal line into the hood is so so. I'm not 100% what I'm doing yet..but things have to flow and look right

Love the way you linked up the '40 pedals. The ball bracket on the X leg is factory-like, how much did you take out of the cross ('Z') bar?

I wanted to mention again that Andy Kohler, thunderbirdesq here, is helping me with the chassis. On top of that he's a pretty good dude.

The front legs of the X member were pulled in a bit and the rear legs spread and 40 pedals were bolted in the stock location. That shaft was shortened about 2.5 inches to compensate for the squeezed legs so the geometry would be right to operate the clutch. The pedals were also heated and tweaked slightly.

Going with hand cut louvers that I do. I was hesitant at first because this style is a lot more work intensive. I have plans for a full louvered hood as well and maybe my decklid. I'm going to have tons of time in these on the whole car but what the hell.

The way I do these is I first establish a center line for each row. I usually like to do 7 rows on a trunk lid and figured 7 would look pretty good on this roof insert. After I have the seven rows layed out I then draw a 1.5inch spaced line on each side of my center line. This gives me a 3 inch wide space to drawl my cut line for each louver.

Each louver has to be cut one at a time with a die grinder and cut off wheel. Then each cut is lowered into my fixture and then hit with a small sledge...one at a time. After, each one requires some tweaking to make sure they are hit through at the same height. It's a process!

Tonight I just took my time and got the layout set up. This step alone took a couple hours. Tomorrow I'll start cutting the lines and then smacking them.

It's a very long tedious process but in the end it looks pretty cool.

Hi guys, I don't have as much "internet time" as I used to but I just wanted to pop in and say how thrilled I am to have a hand in jerry's latest build. We have become pals over the years and when he asked me to help out with the chassis on this car I jumped at the chance. He's got a great eye for detail and uses unique parts to build bitchin cars that have a definitive style and I am really stoked to be a part of that process! This thing will be rolling and steering in a day or two so my job is just about done, glad y'all dig what we're screwing together here. Cheers!
