Projects Truck into a coupe- My next pet project

Started mocking up the gas tank -
It was sorta like this , but I'd made a real nice support for it.



It would have worked but I hated it.
It cut the usable trunk space down to next to nothing. There's no way a cooler would fit. There was waisted weird space behind the seats and under the tank that needed to be behind a bulkhead and forever out of reach- I hated it.
I hated it so bad I cut it all out




Then I started building a new and improved floor pan
Ran some beads in it and bent the sides on the floor over a beam with "1 round tacked to it.


Put a differential clearance bump in, bent the one end the same way after I cut the beam down to fit inside,

Made some beads on the other end.


Then turned the edges down on the side to follow the frame.
Punches some plug weld holes and finished out the tunnel into the new pan.





Quite happy with all that !
The cardboard represents the new plane and size of the trunk.
Now the gas tank I'll be making sit's in the space UNder the cardboard and above the new floor pan.
If I make that cover the "bulkhead" I can leave it open from dash to tailights and stuff the trunk from tailights to the seats or Fold down the seat down and I could haul 92-5/8 2x4s as well as ASS. Could even help somebody move.

I'm just kinda thankful that none of that stuff was finished, all sorta half done , tacked or still clecos. Hopefully I don't get a better idea again lol

 

Just cut off the turtledeck and add a pickup bed.

Gas tank

 

Got the finisher of the trunk floor in.
Sort of nuisance project requiring 2 people.

 

Friend of mine has a shop with some great sheet metal equipment.
He lives close by but his shop is almost 3 counties over.
I'll tell you technology is pretty awesome stuff, even if it's just cell phones, credit cards and texting pictures

So I called my supplier, and had them drop my buddy a sheet of 16ga stainless -via cell phone and credit card.

I sent this pic of cardboard mock up to my buddy via text message

I sent this pic of a sketch to my buddy via tex message


Then he drops off this All most like magic.
It's sheared perfect square and bent perfect square. Those two things would be difficult for me to do with a plasma cutter and on a box and pan finger brake.


So now it's my turn, still lots to do
Make sides,
Make the sump
Make a relief for the differential bump
Make recess for the sender and pic up
Make the 5 & 6 bolt flanges
Make tank mounts
Weld it up.
But I prolly have most of that stuff above made already anyway.

It should be beautiful when I'm finished and a shame nobody will ever see it

 

I wish I had your metalworking skills, I'm a pretty great chassis builder, and can weld decent patch panels, but envy guys who can make stuff. Great work pal.

Copying things is relatively easy, it's a duplicate.

Creating from a vision into reality is whole 'nother animal and really I don't think about it too much (just a little or just enough) nor do I feel Incan control it. When ever I do think too much on this car I make scrap. If it's flowing the project is going but if it's not flowing I can't get anything to look right. I can't just make it flow when I want either.

 

You're welcome, you have skills, myself, I pride myself on chassis work, I build most of my stuff from scratch, my own frame rails, suspension parts, all my own layout, but like you, gotta be in the mood or it's work and I screw up lots. I can't hammer a nail to save my life, and other than making patch panels, can't seem to grasp shaping sheet steel into shapes. It's a unique skill, and I love the profile this car has, you truly can say " I built it", not something a lot of us can say. This car flows, each corner has no corner and flows into the next panel and ends gracefully, a real accomplishment considering where you started.

Finally got enough tacks on the gas tank for its first trial fit.

 

Hobbies can be a wonderful thing when they come out that well.

Yeah I was wondering if it will ever need steering.
You have to drive it for that right?

 

you will get it done it just takes time

 

I know this has been a long battle for you, and I have rode along and even covered my eyes at times, but in the end you will have a unique and cool ride bar none. Don't look at the cost or the labor, just stand back and admire what you have built/rebuilt/designed as a contribution to the Hot Rod University, for Sir you are truly a Professor.

neat, and less worrysome without the suicide doors...
tacked together a topless '35 comm cowl with truncated doors and tudor rear clip, i cut the cowl and w/s lower corners to match 34 cars... traded it for an A coupe pile...
