Garlits vs Chrisman controversy start race: upload_2016-12-7_3-49-46.png upload_2016-12-7_3-50-6.png
    Hello,

Between all of these Drag News and WDIFL re-pop postings, I want to present a movie of a drag race that had reverberations in the drag newspapers from back then. There was a controversy about the race between Garlits and Chrisman at Riverside Raceway back in 59-60. People were saying that the starter lined up the racers and they had a great race. But, in looking at the old movies that I somehow managed to film back then, clearly shows the Chrisman FED way behind the starting line and Garlits right on top of the start line. The action is so fast, and both cars as powerful as they were, the smoking race was one for the books. But, if they were lined up evenly and a short wait to make sure both drivers were ready on the line, maybe the race would have been even more exciting and fair.

Most of the pit crews lined up their own cars back then. The starter just waved them off. So, is the crew or starter responsible for an even starting race? I am sure that tensions were multiplied ten fold at this moment in history. But it was exciting being so close to the action on this day.

Not really a "football" as the Mazmanian car earned that name due to the fact that the chop resulted in a radically reshaped roof that lost the original contour and simply blended into the lower body, hence "football".

"Carbon Express" and relatively small tires make me think that this is a AA/GD. Looks like a Kellison tail, if not their complete body/chassis package.

Actually better known as the NED Bug, this was the East coast version of the famed EMPI VW that terrorized Modified Eliminator in the late 60's/ early 70's.

Junji, You must have been standing next to me!! I remember this race like it was yesterday. Chrisman lined up behind the line, a foot or two behind it, while Garlits lined up right on it. I remember thinking "come on, pull up to the line. The flag starter pointed his flag at Garlits, and he nodded, then at Chrisman, and he nodded...that signaled the start of the race....and Garlits won. If you give up a foot or two at the start, then it clearly makes it harder to win...

We all have to start somewhere. Top picture is Jim Busby in the modified roadster he ran with John Thurber (right). Busby was 15 at the time, this is around '58. He would go on to run a number of fuel dragsters, including the "Beach Boys" car above, and the famous if seldom-seen twin Indy Ford car. Top picture was taken in front of John Thurbers's garage in the San Rafael hills section of Pasadena, where Jim and I grew up. He would leave drag racing to go on to sports car racing (won class at 24 Hours of LeMans), and today restores famous hot rods. He just posted these pictures on FB and I thought I would share them here.

That twin motor digger is about the wildest twin ever, but his chopped Cad powered deuce 5 window is the coolest "traditional" hot rod on the planet.
