One of my favorite things to do in Victoria was walk into Rogers Chocolates as a kid and just breath in 100 years of goodness. Then I'd buy a truffle.

 

I can see the dream of freedom

 

For the younger guys who watch this thread, all of the pictures you see on here were taken with cameras that required film. It usually had to be a special occasion or very interesting subject before the owner of the camera took a picture but sometimes they were trying to finish off the roll. Back then, you first had to save money for a camera, then you had to go to the drug store to buy the film. Color film was more expensive to buy and to have developed so black and white pictures were more popular and would usually give you more detail. The film came in rolls that would have 6 or 12 pictures for some cameras, and up to 36 pictures for 35mm cameras. after you took your pictures, you then had to take the film back to the drugstore, or in larger towns, a photo shop and wait for the film to be developed. This could take up to 2 weeks depending on where you lived. When you got your pictures back, you`d eagerly look at them only to find that some were blurred because you didn`t hold the camera still or your finger would be over the lens. Sometimes you would forget to wind the film before the next picture so you would have a double exposure. But sometimes you would get everything just right and get a great picture and that would make it all worthwhile.
Now we can take a picture anytime,anywhere, with your PHONE! and see it immediately. If it doesn`t look good you just take another. So when you see some of the pictures of ordinary scenes just appreciate the fact that someone took the time and effort to take that picture so those of now can see and remember what everyday life was like then.

 

Ray, if you figure out where that '17 convertible sedan Dodge Brothers is let me know. I'd even pay the full $375 for it. That is a very rare car. I have an '18 in pieces. They have suicide doors and removable door pillars with wire wheels.

 

Younger members may not be aware that the morning milk delivery done by horse and cart the milkman would walk house to house with a basket holding 6 bottles of milk, leave a full bottle and gather the empty, while he was doing this the horse knew the route and would keep pace and knew when the milkman needed to resupply his basket and would stop at the right place.

 

Yes.. There was a movie with red Skelton [who dat?] where he was a milkman with a horse and wagon just prior to motorising the fleet. Pretty neet to watch..

 

Haha....will do!.....I got a kick out of the prices too!

 

As a forty year Photography instructor I concur. I used to tell my students something similar to this every time I showed them Historical Images. The farther back you go in Photographic History the more difficult it was to make the image. I thank and praise all the People who took the time and effort to make these images for us to enjoy now. Those who lived before the Photographic Image never had the privilege.

I like the old days parking areas. No stupid handicapped spaces, No stupid curbings all over the place, No stupid landscaping in all the stupid rat maze curbing that you have to steer through like a rat in a maze, No No left turn signs etc. Just freedom !

 

Well, these folks did have to try not to bang into the sign while parking.....

 

Curb feelers were a popular accessory those days....
