Projects 1932 3W Coupe Lakes Racer-Thrash for TROG West

I am not sure as this picture was stolen off the HAMB, but the guy building the car is in Tucson so it could be Chip the Louver Guy

Well, I worked solo on Friday afternoon for a couple of hours finishing up a few little details:

I also mounted the push bar after painting it brushed aluminum which will match the roof insert, eventually it will get nickel plated when the car gets gloss black paint.

I made a gusset for the column mount 3/4 square tube that we ran behind the dash and then mounted the dash cluster to see what it looks like with the banjo wheel,


Mike cut out the aluminum .063 3003 insert and once Nick shapes it with a nice crown and I am sending it over to Chip to punch some louvers in one and I am keeping another one flat in case I want to stay dry

 

Perfect in my book. Start driving the wheels off it

 

My first goal was TROG but I didn't get selected because they were already full so my second goal is to drive by my 40th birthday in February of 2017 which I think is doable if I keep at it.

It seems when you build a tradition car it take twice as long because their no TCI mounts or 1-800-Speedway parts to make the OG Henry stuff work , it takes a lot of fabrication and patients.

 

I hear where you are coming from on the making the OG Henry stuff work. But you have done a great job to date.....I really like this build. Hope to make a run to Bville with it some day.

 

You've inspired me so much that I'm going into the garage tonight to work on my rear spreader, thanks Man!

Really nice build, sorry about TROG, a lot of us were too late. Hope I'll see the car driving around Pismo anyway!
If I may ask, how are you planning to attach the roof inserts? Will it be weather sealed if removable? I would love to see photos from the inside when you get to that point because I was thinking the same thing for my 5 window.

My plan is to use a button head screws around the perimeter of the original insert hole so it looks like rivets on the aluminum but yet removable , then I plan to use some thin weather stripping around the underside of the insert so when the button head screws are tightened down it creates a weather tight seal, kinda hard to explain so once the insert is shaped and ready to be installed I will get some pictures.

 

Great thread. It's given me a good deal of inspiration. I recently acquired a 32 3 window that was chopped and channeled a very, very long time ago. It's pretty rough and I've been trying to decide which direction to go with it. Maybe I should try to find out as much as I can about the cars history before I go any further. Good job on yours!

Think of it this way, trog was a great motivational tool for you to get it this far in a short amount of time.

I am glad to see you are keeping the top as it was done back when. Many cars on the HAMB resemble each other in one or more ways, yet yours is unique, a really fresh approach. Altering the chop would change what the original builder intended even though that style chop is not "accepted" today. Maybe "accepted" is not the right word, but you have a unique style, AND it is the only one on the block. I like what you are doing and hope to see you at TROG. RESIST THE NAYSAYERS, BUD ! !

More updates today, so since Nick (the owner of Hubcap Hot Rods and Kustoms) is moving his shop back up to the Deer Valley area in October so he is dedicating most of his time to finishing up my car before he makes the move, which makes sense because it is one less car to move, right?

Today's progress is he finished TIG welding the '39 Merc Steering box mounting bracket to the frame today, and tomorrow the plan is to get working on grafting '40 pedals into a CE X member , unfortunately I did not get any pictures today but I will grab some before the week ends. Stay Tuned........

Your coupe is stunning. The stance with the reverse chop is tough as nails. Excellent job

 

Many people on this forum have asked how to put early Pedals in the Chassis Engineering Cross member, well it can be done but requires cutting the pedal mount area on three sides and bending it out about an inch to get your pedals to face forward, if you don't do this your pedal point towards the front left tire, it also requires you to clearance the top side of the X-member some, the '40 pedals I used will work well with the '40 style cross-shaft clutch fork.

 

That's some VERY nice work !

 

So I stopped by the shop today to check on the progress and the guys got the aluminum roof insert installed using button head allen head screws which look like a rivet but are removable, the plan is to make two inserts, one solid and the other louvered.

Mike got the pedals all installed and the floor back in, here is how the column mount tri-bar bracket looks mounted to the floor, sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures, they are very dark now the roof insert is installed.

Thanks Ron, today is a big day for my coupe because it is headed back to my shop after 2 years and 2 months at Hubcap Hot Rods, good metal work takes time and you gotta be patient if you want quality. I will shoot some pictures tonight once I get it home.
