I am new to the board but the thread has inspired me greatly. I am currently building a 64 Comet hdtp A/FX clone. With a stock width rear and shackle relocation what width wheels would you all recommend. I found some 9 inch with 5 inch back set. I could use 8 inch if you think it would cause less problems. Just asking?

  20. Asawman,
I would say some 8" rims, with 8 1/2- 9" slicks. that's with removing the inner axle snubber bracket and trimming the inner wheel lip. 5"bs is too much, I would thing 3 3/4 is closer. The main problem is tire height as the wheel tub narrows up top and the rocker panel cuts back into the tire opening. Without modifying the front of the wheel opening you could maybe only fit a 24-25" tall tire. You can cut it forward and make it look nice to gain some needed room.

Yeah, forgot to mention that. I had planned to move it forward the 4" that I saw the one guy on this thread doing. I will set my 8's with the 3 3/4 bs under there and try to get a pic posted. I saw that Summit has the US 5 spoke mags for a buck 29 for the 9'' wide ones with 5'' bs and got all excited about having that much tire under there. Thanks a lot for getting back to me right away. My son is graduating college next spring and we want to hit the southeast gassers runs next year either as a racer or just drive it to the run. Saw a guy this year with a BOB FORD gold colored Thunderbolt driving to the show/drag at Union Cty and he about jumped out of the car. We are planning on car building now that he will be out of school. Thanks again.

The 9s with a 5 inch back space should work,I had a friend that ran those, but I think they may have been centered!I used to run 8 inch, centered 4 and 4,no issues!!I ran a 29.5X9 X15 slick on the 8 inch wheel!! ROY.

Myron;I left it in stock location.I did use a Maverick housing[narrower than a COMET/FALCON],I did have to redrill the spring pads to center the housing,it was about 1/2" closer on drivers side!!I also radiused the rockers for tire clearance,26.5" tall tire on 14X7 old school American Racing TQs!! A few more from the SS FX thread

Former Chevy stalwarts Sox & Martin and Don Nicholson switched to Mercury in 1964, and here is Sox driving his 427-cid Comet coupe to a holeshot-aided 11.49 to 11.47 win over Nicholson’s 427-cid Comet wagon for the A/FX class trophy at the 1964 Winternationals. Because A/FX allowed the larger 10-inch tires, those drivers could launch at higher rpm without slipping the tires and were decidedly quicker than the Super Stock Ford Thunderbolts, which were restricted to 7-inch tires.

Jack Chrisman was also given a factory Mercury Comet A/FX ride, but because the longtime dragster driver didn't have much experience with manually shifted four-speeds, he converted the car’s drivetrain to a direct-drive configuration and smoked the tires all the way down the track as an exhibition vehicle powered by a supercharged, nitro-burning engine. Couldn't bangshift??????????
