Would this be a project for a novice? I would love to see a progress thread on this. A while back someone on here (hotroddub) said he put a 472 in a 53 Caddy but I haven't heard back from him.

Cadzilla runs a big 500 or 472. There were lots of pics of that. I think 40studedude built his 53 or so coupe deville with one on here too

Paul Harper has one in his chopped tudor hardtop. I've never seen under the hood that I can remember and don't know what oil pan he used but a lot of guys use the oil pans of the Eldorados that came with 500s or use a pan off a 425. The engines that came out of the 75 and 76 full size cars had front sump oil pans. I put a 425 pan on the 500 that I put in my 71 GMC but wish I had hunted a pan for an Eldorado down.

  5. Why?? As I recall (it's been a few years), the Eldo pan was/is more of a mid-sump, whereas the 425 pan is a definite rear sump. Though you do have to shorten the pickup tube strap, as the 425 lost weight in even the main bearing saddles (shorter).

    FWIW, I used a 425 pan in a Cad - Suburban swap.

^^^ No Eldorado 1968-76 is a rear sump pan. I've got a 472 in my 47 Chevy sedan. You want an Eldorado oil pan (rear sump) and the oil pump pickup, makes the swap much easier. Only problem I had was the drivers side head hit the firewall, cut out a 2" X 2" section turned it around and welded it back in for clearance. Used Chevelle big block headers, cut the flanges off welded on Cadillac flanges, had to remake one tube on each side. I have a MustangII front suspension in the car.

More than likely itll be a 76 500. Try to buy the whole car for $500 and use the powertrain. Wondering if I could use the entire front suspension.

Have a good buddy with a 500 in his 50 coupe I think he has BOP type trans. It was a bit of a task but not unreasonably difficult. The thing has torque for Africa and will fry the hides at will.

I just secured a 472 from a 1970 Caddy that I will put in my 1957. I will post the details as I go along.
    What I know today:
Need rear sump oil pan with rear sump pickup tube and new dipstick
Change oil pump - Look at MTS
    Project will start Mid November

I sat one in my '50 coupe and found the oil filter in the right front hit the cross-member. Would have had to severely notch the cross-member to get the engine to sit right, so bagged that idea in favor of the stock 331/3 speed in it originally. Temporary brain fart.

I have a 472 in my 49 Buick, Eldo oil pan pickup and dipstick, 79 Trans am front subframe. Will have to use remote oil filter due to tie rod interference.
