This is a fuel filter bracket I made recently for the belly button bucket. There's a whole lot of other holey things on that chassis, but I will hold off photos until it's a little more tidied up.

I messaged Paul about this yesterday and he responded with... Search dechrome threads. He has one on the Track Roadster and another on a flathead powered sprint car he built.
I haven't checked them out yet.

Doesn't quite compare to the chassis above, but I drilled a few holes in the brackets on my '57 Ford 9" going in my T bucket.

Photo “Harrell Engines L.A.” July 1960; from: 50 Years of Hot Rod by the Editors of Hot Rod magazine, 1998, page 54.

    Hello,

Varying sizes of holes were usually drilled in the front I-beam axles of roadsters and FED race cars. But in the early photos of race cars, the holes could be drilled in just about any where it was going to create weight loss without harming the strength of the steel. It was up to the builder to make sure the holes did not weaken the metal structure. Unless several examples of holes in any part was tested prior to making runs, it was an experiment as to what those little holes would do to help or hinder the race car. Those holes were even drilled in the odd Allison Powered, Art Afrons, Green Monster with those thicker axles.

Without wind tunnel testing to see how the wind was going to react to the myriad of holes, it was just experimenting with modifying the structures. Usually, holes create turbulence, possibly slowing any advantage the holes gave in the first place. But, this was early drag racing and speed runs.

The most unusual “Holey” front axle seen on an FED was the bright red one on the original “Chizzler” back in 1959 at Riverside Raceway. This Midwest created, FED was fast as the Drag News reported weekly. Not only were there the standard drilled holes, but, some multiple, machined, rectangular slots in the long center section of the FED’s front axle. They were good enough to go the fastest 204 mph recorded in the ¼ mile later in 1960. What early racers would not do to satisfy the “Need for Speed.”
