That's kind of "Citroenesque" with the skirts.

yeah, I think the skirts do accentuate the European aspect of the roofline. I had been planning a different look for her, more nose down stance, mags, flames, but when I found the skirts it changed my mind and I thought a mild custom look would work. Lot of work to do and no money to do it currently, but i plan to lower her, change the wheels, custom grille, fresh paint, maybe two tone, flaked roof, dual carb intake, etc. Gotta do rust repair and floorboards first though.

  4. Did ya hear the way that little effin 6 revved?

Yeah, even stock, with solid lifters - you could rev one to 7 grand, hold it there until dinner time and it'd come right back for more.

  5. Have to be honest here, I don't think I could drink enough beer to have my beer goggles ever think the early 60's small Mopars looked good.

My buddy recently sold this '62 Dart, 413 cross ram, push button car. It was a cool car but I kept telling him how ugly it was!

It was so ugly I only have these two pictures of it. :)

There was an idiot female in high school that I thought would look good in my red '32 Five window.
I just finished getting all the nasty little bugs out of it, (4 Stromberg firepots that were too fat on idle...fixed it...) and drove it down to the drug store where she worked. "Yes, it's finished..." she looked out the window. "Where's the rest?" she quipped. I shrugged and left.
TWO lousy nights later, two lousy nights! Here she is, sitting next to Kimmy McAfrai, in his dad's '60 Valiant!
Right in John's Drive In! (the equivilant of Bob's Big Boy, Cool Car Hangout!)
I idled thru, got all the eyeballs, but Nerd Kimmy had this GIRL! I woulda laid a patch with the big 8.20s, but probably woulda sheared an axle key... grrrr....
Kimmy looked just like that car, his forehead mimicked the windshield.
Didn't bother me, just don't know how I remembered it...:D

1962, 'Big' Al Driscoll had a black 413 w/ typewriter drive...he'd back the idle screws out of the AFBs to make a loud hiss when idling. (scared the nerds to death!)
Indisputably the fastest car in Santa Clara/San Jose all year. Then Eddie Perdue (Perdue Plymouth, Redwood City) announced he had his special order 426 Plymouth race car for sale. (never raced, never left the showroom!)
This young guy Jack bought the Plymouth, (it was a 3 speed stick, factory Hurst) narrowly beat Driscoll.
Jack hooked up a tow bar to tow his friend Jim's 427 '63-1/2 Ford fastback to Fremont. Ford was tuned/prepped, when they turned into the gate some of the wise guys yelled out, "Hey! You got the race car on the wrong end!"
    Kinda funny...

Ugly fast cars are fast, and therefore, cool. Ugly slow cars are well, just ugly...:D

I had a conversation with a very old Hotrodder(now passed) and asked him what his favourite hotrod was....
    "Anything before 1937"
    Why? I asked.
"When Henry started putting headlights into fenders... they weren't Hot rods any more."

    haahahhahahaha

Some of them early Mopars were so ugly, you couldn't drink them pretty.

  16. I think most of the early Lancers went to the drag strip with 413's and typewriters.

The pre-cut rear wheel wells helped.

A friend of mine had one of those Valiants in the mid 60's with the aluminum block six that he had tweaked quite a bit. Car was quick and outran a lot of strong V8 cars in street racing and more than held it's own on the strip in it's class at the time. He worked side by side with Bob Norwood (later of Ferrari tuner fame in Dallas) who was the go to guy for Mopar tuning in the PNW in the mid 60's when the State Patrol ran Mopars.
He sold it to one of my classmates in Trade school and that kid drove the hell out of it and destroyed a lot egos of guys in honked up tri 5 Chevys in the process.

Just for the record, I've wanted a 1st gen Valiant since I first saw one (around age 4). Also I've always been a fan of most of the early 60s Exner "Forward Look" Mopars. But then I grew up with a Mopar fanatic dad who at one point had a new '61 Plymouth Suburban wagon fitted with a 413 cross ram for his daily driver.

Also, the '37 Ford is my favorite late '30s Ford design.

    Yes, I am weird :D

Oh heck yah, I'd hit that!
I actually have been looking for a 61'ish valiant with a slant 6.
These things were sooo ugly back in the day, sheesh they ran forever.
And you gotta go full tilt to appreciate the ugliness of these cars. You gotta get the fake continental kit trunk lid. But yeah, would like to get one for the wifes daily driver.

I also felt the same way about these old pilothouse dodge trucks. They were plain Jane, ugly, backwards and most ended up in the scrap heap, marked not worth fixing.
Just different enough to suit me, now that I am 50 years old.
