  1. Great stuff Gary. Do you know the Yasuda family? Many of them still live in the Nyssa area. Great folks who have done well for them selves since the war.

Six men in the photo. All of them probably work there.

No more scrap drive pics please. My heart can't take much more. If it wasn't for that damn war we'd all be driving deuce roadsters.

The caption at the bottom is 100% INCORRECT. That picture is taken looking SOUTH. Several of those buildings are still in existing and the the building on the right near the freeway is still there to this day as well. I make this drive quite often and I am EXACTLY sure where this picture was taken.

I understand your sorrow, but thank God we get to drive the ones we do! I'd hate to think what would have happened if the sacrifice hadn't been made......

Oh, the car. It is a Standard Vanguard. It is a British vehicle with typical ugliness built right in. 1951 or 1952.

You know... I was looking at 8mm home movies that my parents took when I was a baby (1955-56) and I was very surprised at how many pre war cars were parked on out street. I thought about it a bit and thought about how many cars are still on the street now that are 10 years-old or older. In 1955 a ten year-old car didn't exist. Cars were either less than nine years-old or more than 12/13 years old due to the years that so few cars were produced for civilian use.

  22. I agree. It may not have looked as nice as some US cars but it's not ugly when you compare the crap that comes out car factories these days.

My father had one of those in the early 50's,bought new. It is probably my earliest memory of our family cars and I was about 3-4 years old. The next one was a 1955 Vauxhall Velox and then a long line of Holdens(58,63 and 66).
I was really the only one in the family that had an interest in cars and from a very early age. When he bought a new car he would have some excuse to send me down to the garage to get something he had "forgotten" to bring up.
And I would be in awe for a half an hour just sitting in that car with the "new car smell". Good memories.
