1964 Chevorolet Impala SS 327ci (Rebuilt) 25K Miles 350 Auto Tran AfterMarket Upgrade(s): Edelbrock exhaust manifold, 300 cfm 4bbl carb, electric fan, digital dash, 95amp alternator. I need to upgrade my antiquated Mallory Unilite Electronic Ignition (15 years old) and signs of failure! What are a few recommended HEI distributor(s) that would fit my application. This is a cruiser/custom, no burning rubber!
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/GTRP/GM10/02780.oap? should work fine. You'll need to make sure the resistance wire is still in place between the ignition switch, and coil. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/GTRP/GM08/02780.oap? will require a larger wire from the ignition switch, to the distributor, and new plug wires. I recommend you get plug wires for a late 70s Corvette, if you go this way...then route them under the exhaust manifolds, as original.
My antiquated unilite is 23 years ol & has never missed a beat... If you don't want your's , I'll pay shipping !! dave
Anyone have any experience with these? Seems like a deal with new cap & parts instead of rebuilding an old one (the points one Squirrel posted,For some reason this post didn't show his quote)
I had a hell of a time getting parts for a Mallory 40 something years ago and I worked for a guy who set them up for the local racers then. Every time we needed anything for them we had to make a special trip across town to the one parts house/speed shop that stocked the parts.
make sure it's not worn out. A lot of them were worn out when they were only 5 to 10 years old. also make sure it does not have the 4 wire computer plug.
I would put the point dist in it. You will have to maintain it but that will keep you in touch with your car.
Use a GM HEI just check for excess play in the shaft [ this the only part that mechanically wears out ] Install a new MSD module [now available with a built in RPM limiter] and a new Cap with a Good coil and it'll be better than most of the Cheap "High Performance" HEI's from China. Here's the part to use https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/msd-83647/overview/ I used a MSD module for 20 years in my Road Racing BBC with a GM HEI, it has never missed a beat [I have turned it to 8k on a few occasions]
OR you can use this one from PerTronix that not only has a Rev Limiter in the Module, but also multi spark built in - for less money! https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pnx-d72000
The complete rebuilt is less money than buying a used one from the wrecking yard and replacing cap and rotor and module if needed in most cases for a general street driven rig.
