It was cool at the ' Beach ' too with stands so close to let the pipes sound off

  3. It sounded a lot like the 554 and the Speed Sport roadster. You won't hear those sounds again with long pipes being long gone on fuel cars. The only sound better than those cars was the Belmont Sanchez Studebaker on the long course at Bonneville. Clark Cagle's blown fuel 454" hemi, with pipes out the back, running 5 miles, gave me chills. The thought still does!

Yep it sure did Dean, and Markley's tank going into hi-gear and spinning the rears was a pretty cool thing to see and hear too in 63'

    289 mph with a little Dodge 255 hemi ' priceless '

This thing don't sound all that bad when it's on a march. popped a burst panel this morning. Should be back at it when it cools down a little. ResizedImage951366081179836.jpg

I remember it well at Bonneville, the other car whose sound I never forgot was the Summers Brothers rear engined modified roadster, so loud that it caused the grille on my fathers 59 Chevy to buzz, 4 miles away. Same long pipes out the back.

    Hello,
I am wondering if anyone knows which FED, did Danny Ongais drive when he first started at Lions? Was it a very low angled version of a Chassis Research rail? The time period would have been 58-60.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

Jnaki. I'm not sure that Danny Ongais was in the states that early, I first remember him in '62, when he ran the Winternationals in the Dragmaster Hawaii car that Roland Leong owned. I do remember the Chassis Research car that you mention, with really low roll bars. If I remember right, Bobby Tapia drove, think it was Tapia and Hoffman. My pictures are in my now-shrink-wrapped PC, but I will see if I can't find a picture of the Tapia and Hoffman car. It ran in the late'50s, so would have been in the period you asked about.

    Hey Dave,
Thanks for those photos. The Tapia Bros FED looks the same (in 59-60 they had red wheels), but at the end of this video, there is one that I thought was Danny Ongais's first dragster drives racing against the Tapia Bros.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

Dean is exactly right, Zane could mash the throttle much harder than could the Chrysler guys, and he won a lot of races doing so, but tire and clutch technology ultimately caught up with him. He crashed the car at Lions, and Chet Herbert, who actually owned the dragster, drove up beside the wreckage, rolled down the window of his Chrysler push car, and called out to Zane, who was just getting out of the car, "hey, do you want a Chrysler now?" The answer was yes, as both realized that the game was now horsepower and not lightness.
Jnaki, That Chassis Research car is definitely Tapia & Hoffman. I played the video back and forth several times, and think that the car he is racing is Eldon Dye's Cadillac powered dragster, which once had a Bantam pickup cab body. Eldon took off the body to race as a dragster, and this looks like his. I am guessing that this is sometime between '58 and '60. (I found a photo of the coupe but not one without the body) ... anyone else.

I double checked and I was right, Danny Ongais did not come to the mainland until '62, when he drove Roland Leong's Dragmaster car at the Winternationals. Thanks for posting these and the other videos you have put up, the footage is priceless, and brings back so many memories!!

Guys I lived much of what you see on this thread, and the late 50s and 60s were the greatest.

Maybe I need some new glasses but those look more like Weber carbs than injection...

Not quite LB BIG upset Jack beat George then lost to SWC. Montgomery and Merkel had SBC SWC had Hemi. Jack was running the same 364" motor that was in his record setting 39 Willys B/GS car.
