Can someone tell me what the cut-off date is for photos on this post? I can't seem to figure it out. I have a lot of stuff that goes into the early seventies but don't want to get shot for breaking the rules.
    Thanks: Gerry Archibald (Oil Guy).

  6. Holy smoke, this is a rare image! I've only seen one other image of Al's Willys and that was a shot from Drag Strip magazine. Would really get s kick out of seeing a color shot of it!

  7. I see primer on the front. I was at Mission when he hit the guard rail and bent the axle too.

  8. Oily, we try to keep it to '68 and earlier period shots, but there are always those who think that it's okay to bring dogs to a cat show...

Anyone have any idea at what track this pic was taken? Awesome collection, Johnny, thanks for posting them.

So it appears I have already violated Ryan's Rules of Order; which I respect by the way. This is my go-to website each morning and don't want to upset the apple cart. So maybe I will post this old stuff on Facebook or something similar.
Thanks Nitro and Carcruse for responding.

It kinda looks like at the old Bristol track in that little bottom area where the old barn was located.

Thanks mate. I thought that was him but a quick search did not bring up any photo evidence and I was trying to not look stupid. :)

This is the car that later became Aussie Ash Marshall's Scorcher.

First guess would be the early big block version of the Mondello and Matsubara car but the chute pack and push bar don't match any photo reference that I found.

It's Jim Dunn in the Dunn and Velasco altered, running fuel, though it started out as a gas burner. First yellow, they later painted it orange.

And later when the Fiat was a little used up in the chassis department put the blown small block engine in a dragster and went to Indy for the Nats with a small amount of backing from Drag Racing Magazine.
They had some engine issues at Indy and Henry used a hammer and chisel to cut down the domes on the pistons.

I have heard reference to this before (maybe you), man, I wish somebody had this on video. Talk about a title opportunity, "The Stone Age Man".

What an AWESOME find. I have been a life long Blue Oval FORD fan and had never heard of him or this great story. A must read for ford racing fans.

Fran Hernandez was more of a dry lakes guy, but apparently the rivalry that started out around the Edlebrock shop led to the match race at the fabled "first drag race" at Goleta. Tom Cobb was running snow tires to try and get more traction, which backfired as they just spun. Hernandez was out of the gate first and won the race, then quickly attached the coupe to the tow car and left before anyone could discover that he was running nitro. Here are pictures of the two participants:

Tom kept this car for years and drove it on the street. Both participants have since passed away.

The Sacks & Sons Comet was Jack Christmans first exhibition tire smoking racer, using a all steel body and long pipes out the back and boy did it sound great

    Also he was the pilot
