This is what made me start this thread...Stone stocker Hudson with louvers very similar
to The Hotrod style louver. Anyone care to elaborate on where the idea
    for this style originated?

My personal avatar, leaving San Francisco about ten years ago. While I didn't leave my heart there, I did leave a substantial portion of a McLeod street twin disc clutch when I hung it up leaving an underground parking garage in China Town.

Other than being bigger, these look a lot like what Rootlieb (and others) have been using for years as their stock louver. When I had them build the hood top and sides for my roadster I wish I had bought them blank and had someone like Chip put what I call real hot rod louvers in them. They have more of a radius across the top of the louver.
I honestly am not happy with the way they look on my car, a bit industrial.
I don't have first hand knowledge here (I'm only 62) on those big louvers, but I've always thought they looked like something off of an electrical panel.

Hi Denny thanks for some insight. I am more comparing the straight rows more than the shape but precision machine stamping work was around in the teens and perhaps before it seems looking at some of the early millar/ indy racers. Your industrial look is probably very similar to the vintage punching of those early years. Some were in some were out some deep shallow. That 40s roadster belows louvers don't look a whole lot different than yours...

From what I have been told, the "hot rod" louver as we know it now, kinda grew up with the aircraft industry as it matured leading up to World War I If you look at early race cars you don't see much in the way of louvers at all. After the close of the war, suddenly you see lots of them on race cars.

  14. This is my brothers merc, and in a similar approach to what @need louvers ? did, the rows are not parallel, but working with the body lines of sorts, however, the louvers are parallel to the windscreen/rear bonnet joint. Not the best of pics, but each time I look at the car in person it looks 'right', and complimentary, and worth the extra time to get it sorted.

Damned nice work!!! Nice car too.
What most don't seem to get, is that when you lay out louvers like this, it not only compliments the car, (instead of becoming the ONLY focal point!), but it also kills an optical illusion common with louvered hoods where the rows look wider at the front than the back.

    Again, nicely done!

  18. Genius! This is the perfect solution. I agree with Chip that rows of louvers should follow the shape of the hood, and taper towards the front. However, my OCD couldn't stand seing louvers that weren't parallel to the rear edge of the hood. Damn elegant solution. Might have to find another hood for the '35 and have the louvers repunched now. :)

Funny, late last night I was digging through some photos looking for the Golden gate bridge pict, and came across this from Good Guys Del Mar in 2005 or so.

    Wow Chip, so was I.
Now I know you remember Mark Westrick's orange deuce hiboy roadster from Longview.
I mined a bunch of inspiration from this car when I first started on my roadster.
I have the '92 R&C that features this car, but have not located it yet, and try as I may; I can't find any internet photos of it in it's original build state, can only find photos of how it looks currently. Still a neat car, but not what it was with the Hal's and dirt tires.
This thing was heavily ventilated, it even had louvers punched in the headlight buckets.
I sure am Jones'n for some shots of this car and it's "cheese grater" trunk lid.
    Anyone feel like digging.
