Stupid question time........................When you do all those roof louvers on a car with that much of a rake, do you have any kind of catch-pan set up or is that why you don't run floor covering and have floor louvers and just get wet?

    Thanks, Rich

If you go fast enough, the rain blows right over the louvers...

I have a tendency to take over these threads, so I'll do my best to refrain from that!

This is one of the bigger projects I have done, for Dave Benes out of Arcadia, California. He searched me out at GNRS a couple of years ago, then drove his hood and deck over to Phoenix, and came and got it a couple of weeks later.

Instead of stark straight lines, I prefer to work with the lines of the hood, by tapering my rows front to back, and when a strong back edge hood line exists, tipping the vents so they account for that, too. Notice too, how the deck lid's louvers start at the same spacing in the front as the rear of the hood, then taper down to match the shape of the deck lid.

Had fun double striping these louvers;they are about 1/2 inch long.
Or if you can't get to a panel easily just paint the louvers on. lol

You showed me yours, now I'll show you mine.

Hey Chip, have you ever done one of these hoods?
This was done in the 90's for my 66 Suburban.
I worked with a guy that did our electronics and laser setup on the big plywood machines we built. His son in law did louvers but never anything this big, they had a really neat laser alignment setup on the press, and because he was a one man operation; they built a cradle for this beast of a hood. It also was his first attempt at doig inverted louvers, man did they come out nice and straight.

Yes I have! I lay everything out on both an "X" and "Y" axis, so I always have something to line mine up to that directly relates to the one next to it. It takes longer to do, but I find it easier in the long run. I pulled the braces out from behind the outside rows to bring them back to the same end point, then welded them back in.

I really contemplated doing that too, but chose the easy way out this time. I told the louver guy basically what I had in mind (innies and outies) and to use his judgement based on his experience.
Speaking of experience (or lack of). In 1982 I ordered a new S-10 truck, It was the first or second lowered S-10 in Portland. I had some "hack" louver the hood, and per his requests; one to fully strip the area to be punched and two, to remove the hoods' uderstructure. Did all that (carefully). Well, said "hack" proceeded to FUCK IT UP ROYALLY, looked like Little Stevey Wonder did it. So he buys a Chinese replacement hood, hacks out the bracing, punches the louvers (without stripping the paint), and "bird shit" welds the bracing in.
Oh, and I forgot to say; he also used an uprotected clamp to hold the hood down and put eight or ten divits on each side of the hood.
I don't even want to talk about how much that cost to get fixed (ucompensated).

Stellar stuff there NL this thread is about Hamb period and period inspired...I run with threads too. So if what you or I or anyone contributes is worthy material...giver. I just got the ball rolling or should I say the die punching...the others and I like seeing the whole car with it too. Without the whole car the essence of the louvers is not realized. Details are nice too. This is an art literally as is so many of these things we do to vehicles we find comfort in. Don't forget we generally don't get out to see all the things we all do so The Hamb is a virtual evolving carshow and forum for discussion...it is a wonderful thing.

    Thanks Stogy!

I'll give yo two versions of the car. it ran around L.A. in black primer sealer for a couple of years, and at L.A.R.S. I saw it this year with it's completed paint. One is more H.A.M.B. friendly that the other, but...

Another one I have been proud to be involved in lately, Artist Jimmy Smith's personal '37 pickup truck. My design, with the tipped louvers and the rayed pattern to match the line of the hood.
