History ORANGE PEEL

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Austinrod, Jul 7, 2016.

  1. I'm 69 years old next week and from a very early age I fell in love with the 33-34 Ford coupe body style. For a long time I didn't know why because you didn't see many around my home town in Asheville N.C.. When the internet became available I started looking at a website that dealt with early modified racing around the Nashville area. The car I had in my head was a 34 Ford 3w, maroon with gold numbers. All of a sudden there it was, a picture of Bob Reuther's car at Nashville fairgrounds around 1950. The reason I was looking around the Nashville area was that just about that same time my Dad was going to school in Nashville and racing modified /sportsman so it was very likely that this was the car I remembered. On further research I found that the car was sold to Marty Robbins and appears on the cover of the "Devil Woman" album.[was dark maroon in 50] That's what got me into this mess. Better get in the basement and work on my frame.

A little rubbing here and there, some clean up and she'll look branny new. Cool little racer. Are you exhausted from all the smiling?

AWKWARD.....AWKWARD........Just imagine trying to get out of that thing laying on it's side against a wooden horse track fence .......on fire. Or on it's top.....in the weeds after clearing the wooden horse fence.....on fire !!! I love your find and will be following it closely. Remember.......they are only original and battle scarred once. Love it !!!

You are a lucky Man!!!.....And I say you are lucky because you seen this before I did. When I saw it It had already been marked sold. Otherwise this would be here at my place. It was worth every penny that they wanted for it. In fact IMO as cool as it is You Stole it!! I had seen to old pics of it (the one with the girl) and wanted it then, but I did not know who had it. There is very little I would change on it, And I would also make it street legal and enjoy the shit out of it......Congrats man!! Oh yeah, And if you decide to part ways with it please call me...LOL

You know I Love the old jalopy race cars, And have growed up around them. As a good friend of mine Owned at one time eight 33-34 ford race cars. My 33 3 window project is being built out of 3 different old jalopy racers. The guys who drove these cars Had Balls of steel!!....And safety was not the first thing on their minds...LOL. Alot of guys think I am nuts for building my car from old rough beaten up race cars, But too me it doesn't get much more Hot Rod than using Old tin that was raced hard and Fast. Plus it was all I could afford...LOL And I will smile everytime I get behind the wheel thinking about how many times my old beat up sheetmetal took the checkered Flag Or was on it's top...LOL

Neat find and glad you are doing something with it. Looks just like the cars they ran at Devils Bowl on Friday night in the late 50's You saw a lot of sedans same vintage at Fair Park Speedway an Saturday night. It was at the Fair Park in Dallas. Thanks for the ride along. Frank

They didn't destroy it!....They striped it down and made it Go Fast!!...Hence the name "Hot Rod" The guys who Built this car Had more fun than Most people even Know about with it. If It had not been turned into a Race car it would be just another boring "grandpa's old coupe".....LOL

That's where all the 3 and 5 window coupes went.
I have to look and see if I can find any. Frank

I don't really know why, but I'd like to see this one brought back. It's just interesting.

Back of the frame is interesting. Is it grafted on from something else or heated and bent up?

Well, is it everything you thought it would be and more? I saw that when it was first posted and came so close to pulling the trigger. Very cool and historical piece of work.

That cockpit (tm) makes me queasy like standing on a loose gravel covered cliff.
