I would give anything to see some photos of that Nova.
There is a guy on this Nova website (link below) that heads up the L79 registry, I bet he would also love to hear about it. There were a few odd combos that "slipped through the cracks" so to speak. There was an article (with photos) years ago of a six cylinder two door sedan that came with a four speed from the factory, I have never seen any such animal in all my factory sales literature.

The guy frequents the "originality" section a lot.

  2. Here is an interesting thought, a guy that used to frequent the HAMB quite a bit has (or had) a '61 that was a post car (2 door) it looked just like a Belair 2 door except every bit if trim on it was Impala. He has the documentation that proves that it is an Impala 2 door post. I don't know how many of them wee made.

I'll be up his way quite a bit after my shoulder gets back up to par, I'll have to swing over his way and snap pics.

Those do pop up from time to time... One of the SPIKE tv shows, 'MuscleCar TV', had one as a project car 8-10 years ago. I've also seen one at the Puyallup, WA Goodguys show; and my brother-in-law knows/knew of one sitting & rotting on a farm in North Dakota that he could have (had) if he wanted it. I told him they were produced in low numbers, but it just isn't/wasn't his cup of tea, as he is a Chevelle guy.

  4. Things like these throw us off, we all have this idea that things were one way and one way only. Most of what we remember or what is published doesn't recognize those things that were not normal. ;)

  5. Yep, yer right... they can be a head scratcher sometimes... I've seen two of the '61 2dr Belair coupes, which most think were only Impalas. Some of those low number built cars don't get noticed or seen much. Heck, I have a '56 210 2dr Ht. Most people think the '55-'57 2dr HT chevs were only Belairs, but they were also available as 210's also (see my avatar). I had one know-it-all guy at a show accuse me in front of his friends that I had concocted/faked my own 210 HT out of parts, and that mine was originally a Belair. He was certain Chevy never made a 210 2dr HT in the tri-five years. o_O

    back to the '61 content...

  7. LOL that's pretty funny because no one would want to own a Belaire but everyone wants to own a 210.

Those are the same people that think all tri-five wagons are Nomads! Or that any 2 or 4 door tri-five Belair sedan are faked, like your 210 HT:rolleyes:

I had a friend in high school (1964) that had a 61 Impala2dr post, only one I've ever seen.
Does anyone know if there was a Bel Air convertible made in 61? I swear I saw a listing for one somewhere.
I have a friend who is putting together a 61 Bel Air 2dr HT that he found on Craigslist in Michigan, all the correct holes for trim,Bel Air steering wheel, etc. nice piece.

  12. Up here in the Great White North, a lot of people back then were real cheapskates so there were a lot of 150 model 5-6-7's, and even a great number of 210 hardtop coupes and sedans. 210 models in the hardtops I would venture outsold their Bel Air brethren by at least a 2-1 margin. At least around here. Same went for later models up to 63 at least. Lots of Biscaynes.....

Check those numbers. It was my understanding that the 61 Impala 2 door sedan was pretty rare.

From what i can tell there were 6885 2 door sedan impala's built in 61.
There were 3445 of Model #1711 6 cyl, and model #1811 8 cyl there were 3440 built.

And it is fact the early SS option was just a trim package.
Being an early 60's Chevy nut i've seen a lot of original SS cars with 6 cyl's, small cube 8's and generally no performance stuff.
You could get a 64 Impala for instance with the SS package and column shift....buckets and a console with a shifter delete.
They look strange, but they made em.
I was the second owner of a low mileage real 66 Impala SS with a 283 2barrel, glide and 3:08 rear.
Not at all a performance machine, but it was a real SS.

    I dig this thread!

Yes, you're correct. in 61, from what i've read the hi perf 348, or 409 was included as a mandatory part of the SS "package".

    I should have included that

Cripes, maybe my 348 powered 61 four door hardtop was an SS and I didn't even know it.

Apparently there were 210 4 door hardtops made as well, in '56 and '57.

Just a little nudge with a couple of photos I forgot I had.
This is what my first car looked like a short time after selling it in 1970 to another local kid. The 348 ended up in a T-bucket being built by the guy I bought my next car from, a 57 BelAir 2 door hardtop.
