"Silver Dollar" receiving maintenance at Arlington. That's Jerry in gingham shirt, kneeling. Two things of note: Red Studebaker tow truck and best concessions in the northwest. Rich Carlson Photo

Ruth nicknamed the car “Silver Dollar” because “…it made money,” and soon, with the promotion of Drag Sport Illustrated columnist L.C. Taylor, he was being touted as “the king of the northwest.” A matchrace against (Sid) Waterman & (Ronnie) Hampshire at Puyallup Dragway was set up to determine a westcoast king. Though the match was fogged out, Ruth first donned the majestic robes that night.

LOOKS LIKE THE SILVER DOLLAR IS THE EXHAUST SPECIALTIES CAR.

Gary, Note the low, rounded cowl on this car, and the fire-mask. I bet it's the car in the other picture.

  7. Yes, Ruth and several others went to Federal prison in the 70'sfor selling cocaine, largely to finance his racing. He did his time. Over and done with!
    STILL, A GREAT RACER!

Glad I asked! got lots of great pictures and commentary (I remember Ruth running at the Springnationals, in Columbus OH when I lived just north of National Trails. He was running a Scheiffer rear end, which broke, no replacement, so he came into the stands and regaled the fans with stories!

It's Paul Sutherland in the Woody Gilmore "Charger," the RCS house car. I suspect that they were trying different engine locations, and thus the weights on the front end...at one point the engine was WAY back in this car.

It is actually Brissette's RCS car at the Pond but with Kelly Brown at the wheel in the latter half of 1967 and yes, the motor was way back--20.5" out. This car was runner up to the Hawaiian at the Winters with Wild Bill Alexander at the wheel before Sutherland destroyed the Charger at the March meet in 65 and took over driving Brissette's car. Brown started driving it in mid 1967. This is the car that Roger "Riceman" Lee recreated.

This is Sutherland in the car--the famous Flying Drag Link photo.

And here is Roger in the re-pop.

I always look forward to your informative posts, Gary. You really know your stuff. This is obscure, but you have the details 100% correct. I know this as I was a close Farhner associate in those days. This is the only time it ever ran.
