Hot Rods why I like LS engines/CL score?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Jun 15, 2016.

  1. I have had good luck picking up SBC stuff from folks doing LS swaps lately
this guy was getting rid of his older stuff due to going fuel injection
its a 283 with power pack heads, edelbrock valve covers, and a TR1 intake.
complete trans and aluminum bell. spin on oil filter(need this for my other 283)
don't know if the block is any good, but for $100 I can take a chance

Everybody always asks me when I'm going to LS swap my car. Never! I think I like LS swaps for this reason too.

They suck the soul right out of an old car

  9. I agree, almost like some of the chassis swap stuff
I like them in pro touring muscle cars though, they fit the overall them of the car

whitewall tires and coil packs don't mix aesthetically for me

Those swaps are rage here too--get some great old stuff from these deals. Friend just got a fresh Hypo 327 that a guy had built then wanted an LS-also got an 891 dist and a 57 dual 4 intake with it.
. I'm trying to talk him out of it. I hope these guys keep it up-puts good pieces out there again.

I recently picked up a new in the box MSD ready to run dist. for $75 from a friend going LS

I like Gen III engines just fine, they make really good (dirty word here) POWER. Theres one sitting in the basement at my other property, I should probably put a carb on it and stick it in my truck. Nice deal on the 283!

There was a time when flathead Ford stuff wasn't worth anything, couldn't give it away. Everyone wanted the new OHV engines.
Now some of that "obsolete" stuff is like gold.
Now with the LS motors coming into vouge folks are pulling perfectly good vintage engines to swap over.
    Funny how history repeats itself.

  18. whats a disassembled SJ 327 worth?
I just checked, one block has a cracked cyl, the other 2 look good
there are 3 forged cranks, at least 2 pair of double hump heads (194s) and an oddball pair of truck heads with no accessory holes but has 194 valves and screw in studs.

I know they make all kinds of power, I have a 2000 Silverado with one and love it.
But I'm with Jim, no quicker way to TOTALLY change the vibe of an old school type build.
It's kind of like seeing a really cool mid 60's car with 18 inch wheels and rubber band tires.
I will trade a LS engine for a 350/327 (L79) any time. You can buy an LS on just about any street corner nowadays.
Just tell me when to go buy an LS and we'll swap.

This reminds me of a story my Dad told me. Being a restorer, back in the early 60's dad would buy model A engines people took out of cars to swap for new SBCs. I dont think he ever paid more than $10-20 for any one. I know he and Gramps helped out many a car club with restorations and so on. fast forward to now and I have 7 engines, 2 blocks and a B engine. Glad he didn't want to see those old bangers go to scrap.

I have a couple friends, who went LS1, but they knew the value of what they were replacing. Your deal is great. Shit the valve covers and intake would have been $100 around here.

  23. 2 weeks ago I almost bought the same valve covers at a swap meet
I got all this for $25 more
one valve cover needs a little cosmetic on 2 fins, but otherwise looks great for the age
the owner said his uncle did this engine in the 70s and pulled it from a 67 Camaro, hadn't run the numbers but the casting codes looks like that may be correct

We already established that I am a soulless heathen ,worshipping the evil HAMB archangel hp a long time ago:rolleyes:....MSD stand-alone box, a victor and big dp, big mechanical roller and a cheap set of LQ-9 heads? 575-600 streetable pump gas hp, just like waking up in the morning. Hell, maybe I should put it in my chevy II wagon....
Just dont look for me to selling my sj 327 stuff...

When Rudy's truck hit the scene, everybody was ditching their fenders and running boards....I was buying all I could get.

  27. I plan on a mild 283 in my 49 GMC
flat tops, re-worked power pack heads(I know 305s are cheaper but I like the look of the older heads)
mild cam and a tri-power, rams horn manifolds
    simple/reliable

I been thinking about pulling the LS-7 (note the hyphen, it's a real motor) out of my 55 and dropping in a stock 58 pp 283. That'll get george fired up! :)
