Features The '40/41 Pickup

Glad I am a short guy (5' 10" on a good day). I put a Dodge Caravan 3rd row seat in my truck, and set it with the back laid back just a bit, and I have plenty of room in the truck.

 

Pewsplace , yeah that Roy Brizio build is really nice, bad back too, I'm living with it though. Olscrounger you did a 40 Woody ? I saw a rare 4WD one at WOTW in Santa Cruz, it had original black paint, belonged to the beach patrol or ? I would give my kingdom and my 40 ford PU for a 40 woody !!

I used a 4" SoCal Dropped axle, moved the front cross member forward 3/4" to sit the front wheels correctly in the wheel arch,The front Spring is a 33"? x 1 3/4" Reversed eye spring similar to what SoCal sells with the top leaf removed, There is still approx 3" travel in the front.
We Flattened the rear cross member so that it still run a stock spring pack
Firestone 450/475-16" on the front & 750-16" on the back with 4 1/2" x 16" rims all around

We cut down 23 trees to get this one out. It's home now and we're just getting started but it should make a good truck. To paint or not to paint that is the question???????

 

There have been several posts as to the cramped seating and small cab space.
Anybody have any cab, door and seat dimensions?
I'm 6'1", and they have to have more leg room than my Model A's.
The stock seat back looks to be too vertical to be comfortable. Maybe it's one of the contributing factors.
I'm looking for one, BTW, if anyone has a lead.

 

I always wanted one, but, then the '39's came along and now they look right, and everything else looks wrong. Funny how that works.

Yeah, I hear ya. I just really like it when someone puts a project on the road like yours pieced together from a bunch of different vehicles - as you say, the hard way around - and it turns out that clean.

If a guy were thinking of building one of these trucks, there's a lot to glean from this thread. The boss has definitely planted a seed here. Now everybody's going to want one.

I'm 6' 1" and been driving 40 Pkps for 15 yrs or so. The key is to get seat with thin back.
It will work.

 

It also doesn't hurt to have a thin belly, too. I'm working towards that goal.

 

I am 6-4 and have had my 40 pickup for many years.I fit in it fine with a stock seat. One of these days I want to move the gas tank to under the frame which will give me more room in the cab.I think though that having the seat high in the cab helps.Tilt steering helps also.

My 40 I built a while back. Sold it at Hot August Nights a couple years ago to a gentleman in South Carolina, never thought I'd see it again but it's in my shop today. He shipped it to me to add A/C (he says it's hot in SC?) and general maintenance.
I picked up a really clean 41 builder last year. It's for sale for you guys looking for one.

 

Based on your original picks Ryan, it looks like you are finally ready for a custom instead of a rod.

 

Hey, Ryan. The builder of this '40 which won its class at the GNRS also built the black twin to it which won Early Truck of the Year in 2008 at GOOD-GUYS in Ft. Worth. His name is Frank Zuehl, and like you, is a very understated guy. He deserves accolades for his talent.

 

I always wondered if a 40 front would fit a 39.

 

Why not? Thats what I plan to do. I want to Z the frame to match the 40 dimensions and use the 40 front crossmember so the front sheetmetal will fit.

Here is a pic that Rik enhanced. It will have the stock grills as I managed to pick up some with good chrome at a reasonable price.
If my health doesn't get better it may be up for sale again. It's a daily debate with myself.
I would really like to finish it and make a couple of shows like The Detroit Autorama and next years CCR in Indy.
