productive sunday in the shop. got the motor mounts, steering box and steering dampener bracket all welded in. was going to weld in the front panhard bar too but ran out of time. have some more thought to put into location of it anyways so will take my time. just got my lokar shifter in today so now i can finish the front floor pans. Scored a few cool items at the coastal swap meet yesterday! Found this original BC 30 license plate and these front bike fenders. Not sure what the long term plan is with the fenders but it gives me options. Then bought this cool custom gear shift knob hand made by a guy in Langley. U drill and tap to work with your shifter. Haven't seen a spark plug design before and like that it is made in BC! Anyways a fun day in the rain! Thats a single plate...you guys don't need a forward plate in BC? Also you have to run the # to see if its usable and if its good theres the dollars to use it...If not wall art...Theres a few good threads on fender mounting also. Big in Aussy it is. If done right it looks pretty darn good and does serve a purpose of course.

My understanding is we can stick it on the front if we run a collector plate which I won't be so ill either stick it on the front with my reg plate in the back and see if I get bothered or hang it somewhere else on the car. Have several buddies that are cops, they ain't interested in us hot rodders as they know most of us don't do stupid stuff on the road. (At least where anyone else is...) time will tell

The plate thing is so out of whack all over it seems. Here we haves pairs. It has to be YOM only (how dumb is that) oh and the cost huge considering buying the old plates to begin with. Well great you can use it with gray area and all.

Finished one of the front shock mounts I fabbed up and thought I would share a couple pics to get some feedback from the crowd. Not a crazy new design by any means, just my take on a few I have seen. Gonna hold off tacking it to the frame till I stare at it for a while. Fire away with any thoughts or opinions! The shock mounts. Nothing like homemade...my thoughts are you should make the upper area of the mount a little less beefy.
Also add some lightening holes to make it more race inspired.
I often think that look is more for fendered cars. As it has a basic look to it...compared to a traditional old timey modded pickup shock mount.
Highboys are very open so many things are not hidden and chrome and other things may need different attachment consideration. Perhaps some pinstriping can be added later to jazz them up. Now these types of mounts may have been around as long as the type I describe but they are basic/plain looking.
So Fitness just my thoughts. On with the build...;)

Stogy... my feelings are hurt! i can't believe you don't think that is the best lookin shock mount ever! ;) the fact you don't think it looks homemade i guess means i did a pretty good job? ha ha it does look a little beefy but i don't like to make wimpy stuff so went the thick route. the mounts will be painted frame color once done, this is just the before welding to the frame look. they still need to be cleaned up some. i was thinking about adding a few holes to give it that look. thanks for the feedback. on with the show!

You may be able to qualify for a modified collector plate if your interested in going that route. I run a a 1957 Tennessee plate on the front of my 57 Ford
and have never been bothered. I'm in North Van btw.

a tennessee plate? wow had no idea you could do that. i will hang my old plate in the front and keep the "real" front one under the seat if i run into a cop that doesn't like us car guys. i know most of them in town and they are all good with us guys so guessing no big deal. just no smoky bias ply burnouts... ha ha ha

Got the shock mounts finished and mounted today. Happy with how they turned out. On to the Panhard bar then mock up the steering column. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1465788965.621065.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1465788991.401220.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1465789091.555402.jpg

Front floor pans and transmission tunnel done. Still need to install the nutserts which I had to order along with a new tool as the whole front pan will be removable. Continued on with the 16 gauge sheet on the sides but used 18 gauge for the tranny tunnel with it being easier to work in the English wheel. Happy with how the shifter looks. Even got the boy into the shop for a little while! Next up is mounting the seat.

Got all the nutserts installed. Wow my hand is tired! The tool while good quality gives you little leverage to crimp the nutsert. Oh well just whining! Went back and forth on what I wanted to do as far as the seat mount and whether or not to use the package tray. Decided to hard mount the seat and make my own frame. Made the back of the seat able to tilt forward to take advantage of the space that will be available between the seat and bulkhead I'm going to install. Still have more work to do on the frame and cut out the back wood. Will use foam and get the seats upholstered from there. Had the old guy working today. Dad has been a big help and a big reason for wanting to do this build. Thanks Dad!!

Thanks esgee, it's handmade by a guy in Langley BC. Super nice guy and he makes a bunch of different designs. I had never seen a spark plug shifter knob before so thought it would be a cool little touch.

Got the rest of the seat frame finished and wood cut. need to fine tune the swivel action and mount a locking pin. welded tabs on the fuel tank frame i built to land the wood bulkhead separating the cab from the trunk. installed nutserts on the tabs with my handy new nutsert tool. thing sure does work slick. picked up foam as well so seat will be ready to drop off at the upholsters when i am ready. Foam will need to be massaged a little of course. need to get the package tray blasted and repainted. more stuff off the list... :D

Hey Fitness this will give you a chuckle and a little comfort in your sturdy shock towers...not that you needed any...I was on the way to a cruise my way and heard some rattling out there that was a little say different. I pulled into a service station to have a look around to see if there was anything out of the norm. Here ya go...

    P_20160724_195857[1].jpg

    P_20160724_195903[1].jpg

    P_20160724_200056[1].jpg

I was fortunate wiring was okay and nothing else got damaged. Some little twists and irony...Just before departing for the cruise I looked things over and noticed the lower shock bolt was loose and tightened it guttentight (imagine if I didn't it may have jammed up something)...and threw the allen key set in the car for the ride. That was a good idea because I was able to remove the shock and broken tower so it didn't do all kinds of other damage and I continued to the show anyways after confirming it still rode reasonably well. I did notice that I got a speed wobble without the shock at 55mph which normally does not happen so all these things do play a part in stuff working right.

Anyways hope your build is progressing ok...You all are having the big Deuce thing this weekend so have fun stay safe...Stogy

Holy man that's crazy! Does the metal look pitted? I am guessing mounts like that are cast? Glad you caught it without any incident!! Makes sense to use the same design to replace. My suggestion would be to replace the broken one and the other one in case it's a junky offshore pair. I was in mission for a big funny car race this weekend. Couldn't get away for the time to get to Victoria and make it worth while so took the races in instead. Heard that the guy that runs it has said this is the last one he will do but hopefully someone else will step up!

It may have been the terrible roads in the area...dirt roads are better than some of the paved crap I cruise over. Don't see any pitting or rust or anything. The pieces dont fit together perfectly there was stretching. Not sure if these are off shore or not...come to think of it do they make them on shore anymore? I doubt it...but I will be ordering some new ones with bushings top and bottom. Yes it could have been much worse. 3 people died today here in a classic car crash on the toll highway in what looks to be a late forties sedan tudor. They had a mechanical or tire issue and swerved and were t-boned by a bus wiped out and burned...nasty.

Wow that's sad about the crash. Did your shocks bottom out at all? Just thinking of what could make them fail like that. I know a guy on the west coast who makes hand made custom shock mounts guaranteed not to fail!! ha ha. Let me know how the repair goes!

Productive day today. Got the steering column installed. Fabbed up the floor column mount and column drop. Column is a speedway unit. i ordered the two universal joints and DD shaft at the same time. Going with a tilt column wasn't my first choice but with how i wanted to do the seat etc, it was the best option. column will be painted and lots of cleanup still to go. played with mounting the tach on the column. might still mount under the dash. Dad fabbed up a bracket for mounting the top of the rad shell. good and strong and happy with what he came up with. have greatly enjoyed the time with him on the build. The column location passed his inspection and my son's! ha ha. another item off the list!!
