A while ago I saw a thread where a guy welded threaded bungs onto his Ford juice backing plates to mount some cycle fenders. It was a pretty neat tech article and produced a good looking, sturdy attachment. I can't find it. Does anybody have that thread bookmarked that they can turn me on to it? Thanks, Andy
I can't help you with locating the tech thread you're looking for but I welded bushings on the backer plates with 3/8-16 SS button head bolts holding them on. The bracket is one piece torched out of 3/16 thick plate and contoured on the edges to make it look thinner. They've been on there a long tome (20 yrs) and never gave me any problem.
Well then...you're the guy I was looking for. I guess it wasn't a tech thread but it is now! Lol. Have you posted those pics before because that looks very familiar? Is the bracket merely welded to the edge of the fender or is it contoured to run on the underside and welded there as well? If it is, that must have been difficult owing to the thickness of the stock you used. Thanks, Andy

You're correct, they were indeed posted before. Here's a shot under the fender of the weld. The area of attachment was doubled-up (spot welded) with a small left over section from the fender to help keep things more solid. The bracket only extends under the inside curve of the fender as you can see (less for the tire to grab). The gussets where the fender meets the bracket were added after some fitting to make sure they ended up in the right spot. Although it doesn't look nearly as stout as the 2 other fine examples above, it has been flawless for 2 decades. I wanted to keep it minimalist looking. These pics will look familiar to you also...they were in that other thread...
Yes i do. I must have them to pass the tech inspection here to make it streetlegal. And the trend here is to go fenderless as a rebelion against authorites if not stock fenders are used. And one thing i never been called is trendy. So as a rebellion against the rebels going fenderless i going with fenders. And looking in the old magasines theres not that many fenderlass cars outside the showroom floor or the lakes.
Cycle fenders are definately a pushback on the neo-traditional hot rod status-quo!! And very period-correct.
Great stuff so far, can we see some made from gun barrels? saw some years ago ant the tapered barrels really looked nice. Bob
Blue one, watch for cracks at the welds once you start using them, I've never had any luck with tubing mounts, cracks are the norm for me, I went to 1/4 flat stock instead, they are stiff and don't crack. Good luck, they sure look good.
I'm thinking that they never cracked while they were serving as bicycle forks so they should be fine here. We shall see.

Very cool thread! I may have to build a set of (removable) cycle and bobbed fenders for my 34 to get it road legal over here. Even better if they look nice and traditional!
These are the ones I did up for the front of my 31. Then I bobbed the rears because they look good that way. Took 5 inches out of the rear of them and cut the fronts even with the lower body edge.
We went to a traditional hot rod event recently in Aussie and in the hotel car park before the event, here are guys un bolting fenders in the rain and changing the radials to bias plys . Really , if you have to run fenders etc just leave them on , as AndersF said above. Run what ya brung.
Any thoughts on tire sizes and sources for fenders? I find it interesting that no one has touched on that... what have you found best? For example, say I go off looking for a mid-30's Ford spare tire cover (or others), what is their diameter? How big a tire can I get under one? Should I look for a tire 1" smaller in diameter? 2"? 439918.jpg by bowie posted Jan 13, 2013 at 8:24 PM The trad thing to use around these parts has always been a '36 spare cover cut for the fronts. The rib on them is the same width as a'32 3w belt line mounding. They mesh up real well with a 5.60 x 15 tire.
Mine are really lightweight molded in fiberglass with the rib in the middle by a fellow in the UK. Mark Bull. When I got them I widened them a little bit to suit my size of tires. They look nice.
