I'm trying to find a Era correct intake for my 57 283. I'm trying to stay pre 63 everything. I found a edelbrok tm1 I forgot I had when we're they first made? Also Did anyone actually run the 4 barrel to 2 2 barrel adapters back in the day? Are any of the repop 3x2 intakes the same as the orignials?

Factory dual 4's were the hot setup with a solid lifter cam. Never saw the 2 2's on a small block back then. 62 Factory alum single 4 intake is also cool--62-63 340HP vette intake--just did one on a 62 327 in a 40 coupe-but a little pricey.

YES! ^^^^^^^^ This is the 'hot setup' from back then. My bud bought a 270 HP setup from a guy (two fours, WCFBs on a Corvette intake) and we applied it to his ;58 Chev Apache 31.
Duntov cam came the next weekend, man...that little Chevy just improved week by week.
Ran real hard for such small additions...
I'm not a Chevy guy, BUT! I'm building a nice 283 as we speak, looking for some Carter 4 bbls, have the engine ready to assemble. (power pak heads, Duntov spec regrind, new mechanical lifters, Cloyes chain, and finned Cal Custom covers, some chrome, and stainless steel headers.
This is an 'extra' engine, to place in a hot rod 'til the Desoto or Chrysler is ready...More than one project going is the problem.

I traded off a real nice dual quad set up a wile back to genes hot rods on here I think his name was I'm really regretting it now lol. I have a set of cal custom all finned no holes staggered bolt pattern. Would they be correct for the time period I'm shouting for? When did the 3x2 intakes become available for the sbc? I have 3 97s and a new offy progressive linkage kicking around somewhere so maybe I'll go that route instead then I'd only need carb rebuild and an intake.

Those are not air filters but flame arrestors in case of backfire through the carbs. Oil bath filters would slosh in rough water, and when paper filters were introduced they would get soggy and blocked from the high moisture content in the air. Also boats run in a much cleaner air environment, no road dust to contend with so filters were needed less and flame arrestors were used, but they are useless as filters.

Tarantula came out around 1971... Edelbrock still sells the 355B, and with 3 rochesters its a very functional piece.

Mid 70's during the Jimmy Carter "Gas Crisis" there are two Streetmaster versions the squarebore version with runners similar to the early Torker is the better of the two,the spreadbore design falls of just past 4000 RPM.

  14. not to steal a thread, but could someone give me some info on a Weiand C536 3x2 intake I have. when made, value and what carbs fit it. i'm thinking 97's because 94's won't fit without metal grinding or spacers. thanks

  15. I have an Offenhauser 360 high rise (not a tunnel ram) dual 4 intake for an SBC, anyone know the history on those? Just curious of the era those came out.

Tarantulas have nothing to do with Streetmasters. 3-4 years earlier, and a totally different intake, designed for hot street motors making peak power between 6500-7500 rpm.

The Edelbrock C3B, C3BX and C4B single 4bbl manifolds were all early to mid 60's vintage. they were pre open plenum and forerunners to the performer series they all have the early look with the front oil fill tube and perform well.

  18. Crietz made several setups for SBC in the later 50s or earlier '60s. The runners were all but nonexistent but they are still floating around.

I once obtained a 3x2 manifold used on an early 283 with four bolt Rochester two barrels but can't remember who manufactured the intake.

Offenhauser 3x2 part number 3287 was available in late 1954 for the 265 (Fred Offenhauser received 3 1955 265 V8 engines from GM during the early part of 1954 in order to have speed parts available when the 265 engine was released later that year) . 3x2 part number 3558 (for the larger port) heads came out in late 1956 (maybe early 1957). Part number 5254 (3x2 using 3 large base 2GC carburetors) came out around 1959-1960. 2x4 part number 5253 came out around 1959-1960. 2x6 part number 3925 came out around 1958. 2x4 part number 5024 came out around 1958-1959. 2x4 part number 5263 (uses 4 large base 2GC carburetors) came out around 1959-1960. Polished valve covers, part number 3288 (staggered bolts) came out in late 1954. Polished valve covers 4059 (straight across bolts) came out in late 1958. These date are all approximates because most items were released as ready with a rolling introduction during the year (SEMA didn't start until 1963). Also, any SBC manifold made by Offenhauser can be ordered with the front oil fill hole drilled to maintain the "early look" with the oil fill in the manifold rather than the vale cover.

Nicson made a 2 x 2 intake for the SBC in 56, they are exceptionally rare today; I can't even find a picture of one, but I know they made them from threads here on the HAMB.

I wanted dual 2GC carbs for my A, and went about it a different way, very happy with the results.

Dmarv-when did the cross ram adapters come out? Part 5497 I believe. How are they on the street? Similar to a standard crossram and/or would it run better dual plane 2x4?

Sorry to hijack but I have the same intake question regarding the era timeframe mention by the OP.

    Hey Peter

All us guys that were hanging at Bob's in Van Nuys in the late 50's and early 60's had the factory quads with the 270 HP Duntov cam, they were designed to work together and that combo was hard to beat

That is what you need plus with the loose rocker setting your engine will sound great ' Priceless '

  27. Pre 63 the factory dual quads were the hot setup with solid cam. Less popular were the Offy 3-2s with strombergs.

I'm fairly certain that the 5497 adapters came out in late 1963 or early 1964. I believe they are listed in my 1964 catalog (but I don't have it in front of me).

Thanks for the links, videos, pics ,and information. I think I'm going to go with a 3x2 or 6x2 just because I love the looks. If I found the right dual quad I'd go that route too. Anyone know when these cal custom valve covers came out. If there not correct I've always liked the chevy script ones anyway[IMG]
