I'm sure they've heard it quite a few times, if not more Won't be the last either. If they're driving around like that, I'm sure they're "thick skinned" and used to it.

20160424_122929.jpg I guess my Plymouth kinda qualifies for this thread. I fixed the floors only to avoid losing my wallet when I drive it, body and paint are as is with 50+ years of wear and tear.

Fred, I'll bet you do have thick skin. Your old T probably got lots of "nice dune buggy", "nice street rod", & most often I'd bet "nice kit car" comments. LOL

  7. IMHO,the caddy is the poster child for a rat rod ,I seem to remember larry posting a thread very similar a few years ago and had mentioned No Rat Rods.HRP

This is my 63 Rivi wearing a old repaint and some rough bodywork. No hurry to fix it up cause it's fun to drive and not have to clean.

I don't get the patina thing , but if some one want s to ride around in a car that looks like its worn out to feel nostalgic who am I to tell em it looks like a worn out beater , at least they haven't welded on a bunch of old farm tools and rusty horse shoes and chains and riveted license plates over the holes in the body

Here's my 59 GMC. It was sitting and rotting. Now it's running with a 326 Pontiac and Muncie 4 speed. The rot is in the process of being fixed, correctly.

However, the weathered original paint, (and Rustoleum), is staying. I work in a sand plant where anything in the parking lot gets sand blasted whenever the wind blows. So it doesn't make sense to have nice paint.

When it's done, my GMC will be my year round every day driver. Where the rust has been repaired there is nice fresh white primer, though. GMC Rt.jpg

After 4 summers and about 12,000 miles, it doesn't look this good anymore. The Farm & Fleet paint has faded and has scratches and chips in it now. The paint was applied over dents and welded on patches. I might bondo up along some of the weld patches and give it another paint job, this spring, I still have some blue left in the gallon.
Every hot rod I've ever built falls into this thread. I buy junk, build it into a great driver. Then, while driving it, I slowly do body work and a cheap paint job. I can only stand doing body work for a short time, so it gets painted long before its smooth. When the paint looks like crap, I do a little more body work and another paint job, until I get tired of the ride and build whatever is next.

Its all about the drive, man! Get it running and lets go for a ride. Gene

maybe I'm crazy, nah,I'm probably crazy, but I like the ValiantWhat's in it? Here's my 1962 Plymouth, I'd like to have it sharp, but I get by on just driving something that makes people snap their necks. nose of 55 004.JPG

This is a green & white paint scheme, but looks more like silver now. Maybe a coat or two of clear to preserve the patina? uploadfromtaptalk1461735495198.jpg

Here are two photos of the same car. Only one of them qualifies for this thread. Take a guess which was more fun. If you need a hint, we lived on a gravel road.
BTW, the trophies were a joke to match the BR549 and other signage that said things like "Rust Free, Take all you like" and "This car painstakingly restored last Thursday night especially for this show."

Ha! That's the very reason that I'm no longer inclined to "fix up" my cars too much. Unless I wash a car after I get to town, the car is covered in dust every time I leave my property. Let's not even TALK about paint chips.

That said, some of my fleet really thrive on the gravel road, like the '68 Volvo 122 (there's a good reason they dominated rally competition for several years!) and the '62 F100. Despite having to live with dirty cars, I'm not moving anywhere soon. I love my lonesome corner of podunk.

  26. Zeph - Stude pickups were the most shapely of the era. You have a lot of good stuff to work on in the Michigan winters there!

I have always really liked good honest Patina...
However, as with everything, the once wide line between Patina and Shit has now become very thin.....

  28. LOL that popcorn has raisins in it.

I had a lot of fun in this old heap. It is not getting period 4WD done to it and will probably have the rust repaired but not get any new paint, just repaired because it needs it.

Thanks randy. it's got a 318 with a 727 torqueflite, not my first choice for a motor but I'm poor.
