About 10 years ago my Dad made an offer to buy his friends '40 coupe. He didn't know too much about the car as it had always been garaged away - but knew it was a good survivor that hadn't been messed with at all.

Seems like these type of deals are never convenient. For me, timing is bad due to my wife is finishing up dental school this week, I had to write a big check to the IRS on the 15th (I managed to convince my wife to buy this on tax day, too) the renters of my old home north of Austin overflowed the bathtub and collapsed the ceiling downstairs a few weeks back etc - all in all a shitty and expensive few weeks for us.

The car is remarkably preserved. The third owner had it since 1964 and had used it for shows in the 60s and then pretty much garaged it since. He hand wrote the story of the car - with the history from the first owner who was a woman in Houston, to the second owner who was killed in WW2 in 1943. The car came with the plates from 1942 with the 1943 ad-on tags. The soldier's parents stored the car (for 7.00 a month) up until late 1963, when the third owner purchased it out of the storage garage. He bought the car with around 30K miles. There are oil change stickers in the door jamb attesting to oil changes in '64 with mileage of 31K miles.

The third owner entered the car in car shows in Houston in 1964 and passed along the trophy that he had won. From there the car pretty much sat in his garage was used sparingly up until 2 years ago. The car has 33978 miles on the clock.

Aside from the engine being rebuilt in 2004 - the car is all original. It has the toolkit, jack with instructions still wired to the handle, and the interior, chrome etc is all as it came from the factory back in 1940.

My plans are to replace the old rotten tires - then make it road worthy. There are a few hacks in the wiring harness that need to be addressed and the owner included a new factory harness and various Ford parts with the car. It is far too original to restore or modify and I want to enjoy it in the stock state. The paint has chips and patina, the chrome is pitting, but all in all it is in super shape for a car that is 76 years old. The body is immaculate - I could not find a single dent and the inner fenders and seams are completely damage free.

The only mods to the car are the deluxe glove box door (the original is included) - a 2nd tail light, and the factory accessory trim on the bumpers. The PO said that the tail light and extra trim were dealer installed for the first owner.

That's gorgeous. What is that color called? The glovebox door didn't come in a matching color?

Incredible! Good Luck. 40 standards are my favorite of the 39-41 style/era.

That is a deluxe door the PO added for the clock. The matching door (sans clock) is in an envelope that came with the car.

The deluxe had different interior trim and knobs and a plastic fascia on the gauge panel.
I prefer the standard 40 over the deluxe as I like the simpler grill style.

A couple of photos that I found interesting :

    Dual chamber radiator:

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1461713190.189157.jpg

The car has a heater chamber on the radiator, and a hot air heater and defrost system:

The car has these pedal extender pads. They are still soft - and the pedals underneath show no wear:

For some reason, the "Ford" script spare blows me away!

Great car and great story, amazing level of preservation. Weird to think of it at the show in 1964, it was only 24 years old at that point, like a 1992 model today.

Wow, great car! The second taillight on a '40 Standard was a dealer installed option when new, so it sounds like that's what the original owner got. It still has the brown coil and distributor caps, so they could be the originals from the factory. Good luck with the car, you have a good plan for it.

Any time an early survivor ford resurfaces, it is like a new birth, extraordinary. But to find one this complete, this original, and this well preserved is even more extraordinary. The bonus of it being a 40 FORD COUPE makes it the major coup from the wishing well! I would get a Early ford v/8 Rouge award and proudly have the award attached to the famous 40 standard grill forever.

    There's your answer!
That is one unbelievable, incredible find. It I hadn't seen photos of it, I'd think the description was an exaggeration.

Thanks - I couldn't describe what color it is. I have some color blindness and it is blue or green (or kind of grey) to me.
