You could try the trick w baking soda and a battery charger maybe

A (costly) comedy of errors! Last year I did the Dirt Drags, Speedster Reunion, the Georgetown Hill Climb and a lot of local tours. At Georgetown, everything quit at the first hairpin going up the hill. Ended up putting it back on the trailer and headed back to Durango. Before loading it up, checked the spark (weak) and then found that the right rear brake was locked up. There were enough teeth on the fiber timing gear to turn the rotor when we checked it. However, the next time we checked, no spark and the rotor wasn't turning. Ended up replacing the Petronix module (unnecessary) new battery (probably unnecessary) new alternator, coil and timing gear (Dan McEachern). After replacing the Lokar cables, found out there is a lifetime guarantee! Problem was not using the stock rubber nipples on the backing plate ($4 a pair from Sacramento Vintage). Got everything back together with a new pan gasket and head gasket. Also replaced the Stromberg intakes with a Weber manifold. Fired up the first time I pulled the starter and is running great.

Bottom line; there is a trouble shooting sequence I didn't follow and it ended up costing me money I didn't need to spend.

 

Try soaking that gunk in kerosene or diesel. Then get after it with a scrapper and wire brush

 

Jim back in the day I used to clean small parts like that by putting them in a jar 1/2 full of sand and fine gravel and while sitting and having a drink at the end of the day or watching tv shake the jar

If it's shellac you can soften it with alcohol and then some rubbing

Got the new front axle, cross shaft, and rear backing plates installed. Hopefully after work in the evenings this week I'll be able to get it buttoned up and back on the road.

 

I picked up a running banger last week and started tearing it down to prepare for paint. Does this valve guide need to be replaced?

 

I'm getting ready to install a lightened flywheel in my b motor. I got one done to b specs then lightened. Anything I need to do special when swapping or is it just a remove and replace scenario

 

Get your flywheel balanced

Yes , Valve guides are not self-healing.

Oven cleaner, try a sample first. I'm cleaning some rusty Kelsey's in a tub of white vinegar 2 days a side the hose off then brush rust off. But for crud, old grease, or oil and dirt buildup I use oven cleaner. Not on paint just metal, might harm pot metal or Al. For pot metal I boil in water with some TSP.

As said balance is a big thing and use good bolts many of us use 6 bolts instead of 4 just to be safe

 

With six bolts there are 50% more projectiles coming thru floor when the unbalanced flywheel comes apart! Or maybe it does stay with the end of the broken cranks rear main and flange. If you have no idea how careful the guy machined the flywheel was you should balance the flywheel and clutch cover. The disc with take care of itself since it lands in a different spot overtime you shift

I have seen flywheels come apart it's not fun

 

This one stayed on the crankshaft, the pressure plate dismantled itself.

 

I think people forget the stresses involved. Aren't you required to have a bullet-proof can?
