Projects My 36 ford project. Or how to ruin a perfectly good car

So I got my bumpers straightened out. I bobbed the ends and tucked them in a bit. Looks much better than stock. These will be temporary until I get some replacements. Probably 41s. Working on my top upholstery. Proving to be much harder than I thought. I bought duck canvas as a test or temporary top. It's $10 a yard and super heavy. I will eventually redo it in haartz cloth. But $160 a yard (I need 4). I was a little scared of screwing it up. So it may be on for the summer.
Got my seat in and polished the bottom I made. Also got most of the interior in.
I will be repainting the dash as it does not match the vinyl. The car will eventually be the Washington blue color.

 

Remember when your daughter said " Then my seven-year-old daughter told me that hot rods with roofs are lame I agreed." From there to here, WOW!

 

Man that was exactly 2 years ago. It's been a long process. I estimated around 2500 hours to get to this point. Probably 500 more to go to get where I want to be. I'm only about 11k into the car in total so it ain't bad. So if I sold it today for say 30k It would work out that I paid myself about $7.31 an hour. Heck if I can get austin speed shop to pay me at least $8 an hour I could make a career out of this.

 

Really diggin' your theme and your great d.i.y. approach. Now just tone down those bi---- pedals w/ some
satin black paint, (maybe add a fake, third one) and you will stayin' true to the cause.

 

I'm not big fan of the pedals either. They were cast offs from other projects I had. I got something in the works. Although the third pedal

 

A fake third pedal? That would be like putting Olds valve covers on a Chevy.

So I made it to the lone star round up. After doing A couple of shakedown runs. First found out that my brand-new Stewart Warner speedometer does not work and my fuel gauge reads backwards. Had my radiator hose blow off on the first one. Had to have my daughter come save me. got that taken care of and the next day my alternator crapped out. And once again my daughter saved the day. Woke up first thing this morning and replaced the alternator. which is no easy task mind you. It required me to remove my inner fender just to get it out.
Loaded up and hit the road. It's only about 100 mile round-trip for me but still baby steps.
I got the fabric for my top and then probably screwed up. So I'll be re-ordering.

 

Those first road trips can get interesting ....It is always good to have some sort of back up plan or persons to get parts or a tow home for adjustments. Your roadster looks great!

Well where you started and where you are now is a great accomplishment, shake down runs can be irritating to say the least but all said I'd have to say not bad. How did she drive over all?

 

I re read your whole thread today... I seriously think I'm gonna take my project topless. Got a couple rides in different stages of completion but no convertibles..... I've been stuck on the roof and door tops of my conversion for ever. Kinda lost motivation and ended up starting a Coe project instead. Maybe now I juggle 2 at the same time!!

 

If you do I strongly suggest going cabriolet style and not roadster. A lot less work. Plus you can have windows. Look up the black dahlia

I had a flat yesterday and had my top off. (Unfinished) and it was raining. So sometimes it ain't so good to have no roof. It didn't take my car on Saturday driving it in the rain with out a top is not a option.

 

Sucks about the flat tire. I looked up Black Dahlia. Ironically the new owner modified it for a smoother look so now there are no windows and it never had a top. Anyways yours looks way cooler in my eyes.

Hey what's the title to your old build thread again? I can't find it on the new app.

 

Don't loose heart; shakedown runs can be disappointing until you get the bugs worked out.
And don't compare your old school hotrod to an old school custom. While the Dahlia is a
great example of the later, I would bet it's basically a shop car, and yours was built by yous!
The pride factor will be emerging in the near future as you make yours more reliable.

 

Well I managed to save my canvas for my top. I had to add a little bead around the edge to cover up where I cut it short. It's temporary anyway. In the winter I hope to break it down and paint it And I will redo it then. So this is the way it will be for the summer. It's by no means done. But as long as a road I've been on with this thing. I'm glad I can enjoy it. I'm really happy with the overall look of it. Some of the craftsmanship is not where I want it to be. So I've got some more learning to do. Thanks for following along.
It's too loud. It's chopped too much. It's too low. The paints not shining. I think It's perfect. it's a hot rod.

 

That's pretty much the motto of this place, isn't it?

 

So, it basically took a week to cover the Carson top and most of that week you were also doing shake down runs or at a car show.... Amazing!

And just like that this project comes to a end. The black pearl moves on to her new owner. Now time to get on "mamas merc" and my 60 olds soon to be daily driver. Build threads coming soon

WHAT! Summer isn't even over and she's gone? But I like your next steps, one of many and I have really enjoyed your build.
