I just finished rebuilding a USAC compliant 1957 Chevy 283 using the original Jahns aluminum pistons and stock crank. From what I discovered, engine builders of the day had to keep the cubic inch displacement to 305. That said, they could do almost anything else as far as cam, heads, intake and exhaust setups would go. Mine had an early roller cam which I did not use because of its inherent weakness. The heads were ported and polished, valve seat angles changed, and used stock valves, springs, push rods and rocker arms.

We did little to the motor other than clean it, check the specs, hone and line bore, shot peen the rods, knurl the piston skirts, rebalance the crank and reassemble.

It runs Hilborn mechanical injectors and cam driven fuel pump, a Lehman crank driven water pump. I installed a Schneider flat tappet cam and solid lifters.

On the dyno, it cranked out 355 horsepower @ 6000 rpm and 347 ft lbs of torque @ 4500 rpm. Not bad for an almost 60 year old engine using the technology of the day.

May not be the fastest, but it sure is pretty!

    That's a beauty!
The head on the pass. side appears to be a 69 and later head.
    What's the deal there?
Again guys, I can delete this if offensive to the thread.

No "deal". The heads are genuine 1957 Corvette Fuelie heads from the 3731539 stamping. Another indicator of early heads is that the valve cover hold down bolts are closer together on the intake side, than that of the exhaust side.

I never knew that any 57 heads had a way of attaching anything. I remember the front of the left head and a lot of other cast in indicators but any place to use a cap screw...

Am I crazy or is that a front wheel drive car? At any rate I sure don't recognize the chassis.

The f/r tires and radius rods tell me it's probably rwd. I couldn't come up with any info on the chassis either. If it was painted green it would look just like a big cucumber on wheels. :)

After reading the replies to my recent post, I got to wondering about the mounting points on the head. So about 10:30 last night I drove over to the shop and pulled the valve cover off of the right head. This engine's heads are the 3755538 1959 Fuelie heads. We're building another engine for one of the other cars and it has the 1957 3731539 heads. I was going off of parts list rather than the build sheet. Sorry for the confusion.

was it an aftermark for the Ford Flat head ? I was curious if it was one of Joshua's relatives.

I'll play, but this is a little before my time.
Front row, second from left - Johnny Rutherford
Front row, third from right - Gordon Wooley ( maybe Jerry Blundy )
Middle row, second from left - Jerry Reichert
Back row, middle in dark shirt - Jim McElreath
Also in the front row there are three possibilities for Jud Larson
