I've got a Carter Carburetor, looks just like the Edelbrock carburetors sold now, the number stamped on the base is 2639 9G 5S, does anybody have an idea which of the many Edelbrock carbs it is similar to, or a rebuilt kit number and calibration kit number. I called Edelbrock and they had no information at all. I've had this carburetor since the mid to late 90's, it originally came on a BBC engine that I owned, hard to believe it might be a 20 year old carburetor.
There should be a plate on it as well, the base stamp is just a part number...is it a 4 barrel? Could be a Carter AFB...
Your carb is likely older than 20 years.Generally AFB and Edelbrock parts interchange.Edelbrock is just an AFB with an italian accent.If a rebuild kit is what you are looking for one for an Edelbrock will work.

can you post a picture? Carter carburetor numbers end with the letter S. Like 9625S. The early ones had a tag on top, which usually got lost, later ones had the number stamped in the lower front mounting ear. Early AFBs had a smaller air cleaner base, 4.25" or something, as opposed to the 5.25" that is standard on the later ones. Pictures help.....
Dumb me Here are pictures , the only ID I have is on the baseplate in the second picture................... 2639 9G 5S is the number, a little hard to read, yes it is a 5.25 inch air horn. There are 10 calibration kits listed on the Edelbrock site, so I'd like to get close to the right one, maybe I will have to mic the metering rods to find a match, any other ideas? Thanks for the help!
The 96?5s is the carb number. I want to say it is a 625cfm carb the only numbers that it could be that start with a 96 and end with 5s are 9625S and 9635S. Both are 625cfm.
Flip it over and look and see how big the throttle plates are. If the the front are some what smaller then the back you could make it work but if the front are just a bit smaller then you better be set on kill with a 327 and that carb.
9605s 600cfm aftermarket AFB from around 1995. They use the same gaskets as an Edelbrock, but they use a different combination of jets/metering rods. Carter uses a different numbering system than Edelbrock, so it's kind of hard to cross parts unless you have a Carter AFB book (PN3703A) and an Edelbrock book. Their tuning guide tables are a little more complicated than Edelbrocks charts, but it's not rocket science.
I had one of those on my 39 Deluxe Ford years ago. Same basic carb as the old AFB or the new edelbrock carbs. Will probably have different jets and metering rods. Edelbrock carbs perfoemance kits jets and metering rods should work
When I was rebuilding the Carter AFBs for my blown 427, I discovered that Summit sells their own brand jets and metering rods for them. I used the Edelbrock tech info to find the original size jets and rods for a 750 carb, and used them. works good. I had an AFR meter on it when I got them set up, and the numbers were about right.
