You can't beat the trailing arm setup, leaf springs suck! And besides you can buy 5x5 lug rear axles from Moser for about $250! I'm running a chrome GMC grille on my Chevy

  3. Whatever you prefer? $250 for axles? Man I only pay $250 or less for entire trucks. We buy those square cab trucks at the impound auction really cheap. We bring them home and junk them. The engine & trans sell quickly. even if they are only cores. And then We still have the disk brake frontend and 5 lug rearend. and get better gear ratios. Change out just the axles and you still have the 390 or 410 rear gears. Im skilled enough I can and have welded all the trailing arm brackets on a later leaf spring rearend. Ive never had a problem with leaf springs? been using a leaf spring 56 ford Pk . started driving it in the hayfield in 63 when I was 12. Never had any spring trouble and it has 4 leaf springs. I put a 390 horse 427 in a 63 trailing arm Pk and I broke a trailing arm just ahead of the U bolt. and Ive broke the rear coil springs also.

i run the trailing arms myself, and if i ever change it it will be a ladder bar or 4 link. but i know for a fact what i call a square cab (73-87) the rear is at least 3" wider.

I don't have a problem with leaf springs, I just prefer the trailing arms. The NASCAR trucks run a very similar setup. There's a guy at the local drag strip with a 64-66 with the factory trailing arm setup with a ford 9'' with the trailing arms boxed and he pulls the wheels about two feet! Plus it eliminates wheel hop.

  6. Yes its a bit wider. and you have to weld on shock mounts. It does bolt to the springs.

A bit wider can make a big difference when you're wheels are wider or have more front spacing than stock.
Then lower it and you're really stuck.
I changed my whole 66 Suburban over to five lug four wheel disc brakes by just buying Moser stock length 5 lug axles.
I could only fit eight in. wheels on the back even with stock housing.
So I narrowed the housing 12 inches and put 12 wide wheels on it.
People just can't leave shit alone.

The guy who owns them has had them stored at an industrial yard for a long time, and I've heard he would sell. Driver window is missing, so floors and interior are shot, but rockers and fenders where they usually rot are better than most ( at least for up here that I've seen). The regular cab one beside it is similar shape. Don't know if they are factory 4x4s or an aftermarket conversation..

  11. Ok so you want to keep the narrowed rear end. with a lathe you turn down the original axle splined end to 1/2 of its diameter about at half of its length. leave a stub about two inches. cut the hub end from the 5 hole axle however long you need it. Drill a press fit hole in the end. press it together and V groove the seam. then weld it together. chuck it in the lathe and check for straight.

that's a poor mans way to narrowed axles, the only thing i would add to that is heat before welding and bury it in a big pile of floor dry (kitty litter) to let it cool slowly.

Here's my '66 long bed I picked up a few months back. Though it's not all in the photo, it came with all the parts only in a million pieces. I'm planning on bagging it and putting a 5 speed in it. [IMG]

Here's my c20. Currently under construction. 5 lug 3.08 rear from a 71 and early classic drop 1/2 ton conversion spindles. 4 wheel discs. Getting ready to paint the floor and interior then slap it back together.

Finally got around to my old 64. Rebuilt the trans, new floor shift, u joints, carrier bearing, rebuilt my carb, tune up, oil change etc... she's driving real good now. Still need to rebuild my steering box, new tires and registration. Keep chomping and it'll be ready before to much longer.

Here's a current pic of my 66 GMC. Almost done with it. Dropped with front disc brakes. Original 305 v6 and 4 speed on the floor.

I've had a few of these trucks (65&66) 1/2 ton to 1 ton and always thought the front bumper looked like it was mounted upside down. I often thought about flipping mine but never got around to it. Anybody done that?

I have never flipped them, but one thing I could not get used to on my 66 Suburban is the big factory gap between the bumper and the filler panel. I cut down the factory frame/bumper horns and tucked the bumper closer to the grill by about an inch.
Sorry, no digital photos available right now.

I figured that flipping the bumper over would match the angle of the fenders and grill surround.
