Features The Ugliest Kustoms of the 50s

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Jive-Bomber, Feb 21, 2013.

  1. Looks to be an aussie '57. That grille is aussie stock '57, with the big ex-Canada Meteor badge used here in '57. This body, as stated, was used here 'till 59.
I guess the plate is either 'vanity' New South Wales 1940-1960 style or maybe Northern Territory (Croc Dundee country). Definitely aussie. I've seen photos of this car before at old Castlereagh or Fisherman's Bend drag meets. There were numerous Customlines done in this vein. A full-on celebration of fins happened down here '60-63/4. The best would be the Pirotta car from Melbourne with chromed copper everywhere and home- crushed chunky flake in candy red or sumpin' like it (red). I think this car may still exist in fine shape. Some Melbourne folks will know.

I wonder who signed the glove box door. George Barris? Looks like it says "49 Ford" and that's probably what it started life as.

The sad part is it takes just as much time and money to build a FUGLY car as it does to build a good looking one.

Frank Maratta was a North East legend, and his productions/promotions may continue to this day.
Not raggin' here, BUT...Sometimes, customizing was more about pushing the envelope than about classical beauty.
I think the "Pink Beast" fits the thread title.

The poor old shoebox looks like it got it's lights punched out and now has Chinese eyes with a front dam from the local supermarket and wheels from a supermarket front wheel drive.. I think you would need arms the length of a gorilla to reach the steering wheel.

A better name for the Pink Beast is the Pink POS. A great reason not to do drugs while working on cars.

  14. The worst part is the Pink Beast started out as a 1940 Merc convertible sedan.

That shoe box is uglier than a bucket full of ass holes.

John Hychko's Stude was another In-Your-Face 50's custom from the Northeast.
Some might even call it ugly.

Car was built with new factory panels, including '59 Caddy fins. These were certainly wild times even for stockers, and customizers went to great lengths trying to top Detroit.
EDIT: Anybody got a picture of Hychko's Model A coupe, with '59 Merc taillights...on the top?

HA, at first i thought that was a reflection ,like a artsy pic but its not. Maybe it would be better if it was a reflection -you know -like they should drive it in a lake.

I have always been fascinated with this car. it was pink, and started life as a fordoor, but I always wondered where it went, and why it was done that way.

  20. I thought this thread is about ugly customs of the 50's.

If more modern ugly custom are posted here, they will close this thread for sure.
Would be sorry, because otherwise it's a interesting thread.

I zoomed in and it sais:
    "Yvon Savoie, 1951 Ford"

Yeah, no idea what it means either. Haha!
