In March of 1980, okiedokie had a '40 Ford coupe for sale in the Tulsa Tribune newspaper, $3,600. I called, and told him I worked nights at the Rainbo Bakery and would have to come see it in the morning. He gave me directions to his house and said, "I have a six-car garage, you can't miss it." He asked that I come about 7 a.m. since he had to leave for work. I drove down the street and spotted the house: the six car garage was the dead giveaway. I rang the doorbell. A lady answered the door in a robe with her hair in curlers. She looked a little puzzled that I was ringing her door at seven in the morning. I said, "I'm here to look at the '40 Ford coupe." She still looked puzzled. I said, "You do have a '40 Ford coupe, don't you?" She said yes, but it's not for sale. I said, I talked to Joe on the phone last night. Then she laughed and said, "Oh, you must be looking for our next door neighbor's house which is right there," and she pointed. I had knocked on Orville Adair's door, and okiedokie lived right next door, both with six-car garages, both with '40 Ford coupes. I remember how nice Joe was to the skinny, frizzy-haired kid with thick glasses. He showed me the car, gave me a drop light to crawl under and have a look, and let me drive it down the street. I wanted the car but it was not to be.
Since then, 36 years, I have looked for a '40, one of my two "bucket list" cars, the other being a '56 Nomad which I wanted since 1972 and bought in '91. I have a "cars I'd like to own list" that I have whittled down to a mere 59 cars, but the bucket list only has two.
Last fall I traded my '47 Ford coupe for a '29 Model A pickup (with '30 cab) and then sold the '29, all with the goal of gathering up enough money to eventually get a '40 Ford coupe.
Well, Sunday evening, I was looking at the local craigslist like I always do and there was a '40 Ford coupe for sale at a price that I could afford now. Monday afternoon, it was mine. It is not perfect, but it is a darn nice car that was built 25 years ago and still looks good, runs like a top, rides and handles great. It has a few things that need to be tended to, none of which are major or will take much effort. I will be changing things as I have opportunity to make it more traditional, but it won't be much because it doesn't need much. Here are a few photos

  2. It looks like a helluva nice start! I say that because like most new owners, I'd imagine you'll want to change a few things. Very nice!

Looks great and won't take much to make it look traditional! Bucket list car for sure.

You should head back to that old neighborhood and see of the lady in the curlers is ready to sell now. Then you'd have two coupes!
