I've been watching craigslist for free leather couches and recliners and saving. the leather for my door panels and kick boards. It's a good way to get leather for your projects

That's a really good idea.. I never thought of that! If I can't find material for a seat I may do that! Also after talking to a bunch of guys on here I heard a lot of people use a Dodge Caravan third row seat as the bench for these cars since they're narrower. Anybody have any success with that?

Here's the culprit for the constant oil leak. The holes are way out of round. Time for new valve covers.

I had some spare time today so I decided to mock the license plate up. I've always loved the look of this location.

    NOT third row!! (44 1/2 "), you want the MIDDLE seat ( 42 1/2" ).

They have a "bear claw" mechanism that holds them to the van floor and come out with NO TOOLS. Just release the levers, and throw it in your truck!! There's lots of extra weight in the track system that comes off with 4 bolts.
Around here I get them for about 25 bucks, and have a guy cover them with extra foam padding and vinyl marine grade material for around $350.

    Pictured; roadster, coupe, sedan
A friend put one in his '32 with covering from a leather couch on it, and it looks killer.

What year set Mike? I am not really familiar with those vans and I thought they were 2 individual seats in the middle and the bench was the third.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it's the late 90's vans correct? This pic is a 98.
There was an option when buying. Either 2 captains chairs for the middle row or a bench that's a little narrower than the rear to give access to the back seat.

The "NS" models of minivans introduced in 1996 by Chrysler either had the "quad" seating with buckets in the first two rows (optional), or as Mike mentioned were equipped with a second row bench.

Glad you asked- I got my notes out, and I gave you the WRONG dimension!! ( I love getting old).

"Redzula" is correct, although I haven't run across any captain's chairs ( yet).I've seen swivel buckets in some?? Probably the same thing.

The seat you want IS the CENTER seat ( it's narrow so people can get to the rear seat) and the REAL width is 40 1/2" ( back is 42 1/2 =/-) Key is the width- there may be other models with the same seat??

If you find a mid to late 90's Dodge Grand Caravan, you've hit paydirt. Once you take all the modern plastic bullshit off, they make an excellent seat for a hot rod. I use the existing mounting plates and bolts on the bottom ( once the latches are removed) and set the height using blocks of wood under the seat to figure a comfortable height ( higher in front, lower in back) .Then build a wood riser or metal brackets, and you're done!
Good luck, play safe, and rock on.

  10. Just went through your thread, I like what you've done with the car man! Is that a '32 dash? I hope to see it someday soon and hopefully we can cruise around together!

  11. I've got a Dodge Grand Caravan seat in my Model A Coupe, fits like a glove. I love it!

do you have any pictures? I'd love to get an idea of what it looks like

  14. Nice, yeah I was wondering if it was reproduction or not.

Here's a picture of the seat, I just had to make seat legs for it to mount to the body. Worked out great!

that looks awesome! and yeah.. this was a little cheaper, and smaller in diameter. I didn't want the huge wheel, because the column angle makes it a PITA to see out the windshield. Are you planning on getting that seat recovered? JW

The next thing I'm going to do is have the package tray removed. I see you don't have yours and it looks like there's a ton more room.

  18. Yeah I'm going to recover it, I'm actually apprenticing at an upholstery shop currently. Hopefully be doing upholstery as a career. I probably won't recover it until next winter or so.

  19. There is a lot more room without the package tray, I wanted to keep mine but it would've put the seat too far forward.

So I walked outside before going to work and I noticed this about the car. I got pools of coolant on the engine. I know the water pump is going, because I can hear it when I rev the car. But I don't think this the cause of the leak. I think the seal from the thermostat to the engine is bad. I put my finger right on the bottom of the thermostat, and its damp. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the link, Wex65 , I'm not computer literate enough to do that.
Excellent thread you started, needs to be bumped often! Regards, Mike from Mass.

So haven't been on here in a long time. But there has been a good amount done on the car. The majority has been body and frame work. We removed the package tray and extended the seats to the back of the car. Again, please ignore the awful seats. They will be replaced eventually but it's all I had laying around at the time to put in the car.

The next job was to go about replacing the gas tank with a bigger one, and we figured we would just re do the floor as well since there would be another major body and frame modification happening. Here's the old vs new trunk floor.

I think the biggest thing we did to the car was taking Z out of the frame. We took 2 inches out (lifting the body up 2 inches in the rear). Went from a 6 to a 4. I think it came out pretty well. I'm really glad I have a friend who is very skilled with a welder. Haha. Also as you can see there are also pictures of me holding the new frame segments which move the Z back in order to take the package tray out.

Another problem I was having was the transmission linkage was very loose and the car wouldn't stay in gear. This was super easy to fix as the tensioner had just come loose and I just needed to tighten it.

After all this work and as I'm driving her back from my friends shop, I blow a hose a mile from my house and puke coolant all over the road... just my luck....
