Projects 1940 Plymouth Coupe Build!

Looking great Scott, nice to see it all coming together. You seem to be moving at a steady pace. Any idea on the colour? (you may have mentioned it somewhere...)

 

Well my Dad and I made a little trip today and found some really good, rust free fenders, grill, and grill fill pieces all for $100. What a score!

 

Dang! That IS a score! I had to work and work on my DSL front fender to get it right. I would have gladly given a hundred bucks for a good one.

 

The guy has the hood and all the stainless trim, hood, radiator support, etc. somewhere and is looking for it. If he finds it he is going to give me a call. All of that for $100 too. I'll take it!

I am going to work on the grill fill pieces that latch the hood this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to get all of this stuff done piece by piece then I can get the rest of it together quickly

I wish I did buy a lotto ticket! I started working on the grill fill pieces between the hood and fender. I straightened them out a bit and will be getting some good body tools this weekend at the swap meet to hopefully finish them up a little better. More to come soon!!

 

Well we went to LARS and stayed at the camp ground overnight. Not a lot of stuff but I did find 2 1940 plymouths in the swap meet area and also found some loot. I found a 350t tranny pan, a flex dipstick tube and an EZ wiring harness for cheap. I will also be picking up a nice set of really good headers that will work in the coupe from Sanderson. I am looking forward to getting back to the coupe soon. I'll be working on it out of the car trailer since space to actually do work is so hard to come by.

Thanks! I've been trying to work on things but have been having a lot of issues with a debilitating back injury.

I am trying though.

I have just sent my radiator to mattsons in Stanton and will be getting the fan, relay and radiator so I can actually get it running again. I am also working on tiny projects, like restoring the headlight buckets in preparation to wire it up.

I am working on it barely out of a completely packed, enclosed car trailer. I don't have a place to work on cars anymore, plus with my back it makes it nearly impossible to do so in tight places like the trailer. I guess I will hope for some shop space in the next couple years

I ran a tap through all the bolt holes since the threads were too crusty to accept any hardware. I checked the fit and it seems like it might work. I am going to install it today. Stay tuned.

My first car, in 1978, was a '40 Plymouth P10 coupe -- 283/Powerslide, ChryCo 8 3/4 rear end on the original springs. One of the older guys in the car club (Rod-Tiques of KC) told me those rear springs were called "full length shackles" and had to be torn apart and re-greased occasionally. A pain in the arse as I remember. That's probably why yours seemed to be so pristine.

My progress has been slow because I had been looking at about 15 pre-1972 old cars as my new daily driver, but all of them were hideously overpriced or too rusty. I decided just to throw that money into my truck instead and the remainder into my coupe! Look for more progress soon!

 

Just waiting on the paperwork to get it licensed.

 

apache do you have a part number for that rad?

 

It was custom, it doesn't have a part number. If I were to do it again I would have it come with a 1 3/4" lower rad hose straight fitting. There isn't much room there for me to do too much.

You did, I still have that and am not running it anymore. It is for sale
If interested. It was recorded to a 3 core and worked fine for my install until I changed the front frame, which caused it to no longer fit

Very nice 40 coupe! Di you happen to pick that car up from Nevada? A while back I saw an ad of a light yellow 1940 coupe and though it was a very very nice car and a great price!

 

Yup. It's well travelled...it went to Michigan, then Minnesota, then down here to Arizona. Hopefully it'll stay here for a while! Here's a shot of it at VLV 2011...I'd like to find some construction pics of it.
