I did a quick search and didn't find anything.. So figured I would try to start one.. I have seen looked through a lot of great threads on homemade tools and equipment, favorite dash in a model A, show me your full fendered hotrod, favorite 32.. Anyway I like to build as much as I can and I have learned A LOT! That brings me to the point... I have leaned a lot of different ways of doing things and making things while browsing around here and on other social media places.. What i hope happens here is people can find ways to make custom parts at home in one thread.. maybe what tools they might find handy... And I would like to keep CNC stuff out due to not a lot of people having access to it at home.. Oh and I don't wish for it to become a negative bashing other people's work thread... If you don't like the way something is done.. Show how it can be done better or safer! So anyway I'll show you mine if you show me yours haha!!! Put a headlight switch in the instrument panel on my 28 roadster pickup Bar stock of aluminum with a few steps turned it and a 1/2" hole drilled through the middle.. Mounted it Little exhaust hanger out of some scrap aluminum Drill, tap, cut some notches, and slant the edges.. Used a u bolt out of a cheap-o muffler clamp
Most of what I own is either home built or modified to work as intended. nothing is a bolt on at my house. I sure wish that it was. LOL Going to watch this thread and maybe someday I'll even have something to add.
I cant post a pic. right now because my '59 1/2 ton is in winter storage but I drilled a hole through the center of two hockey pucks and use them as bushings for my Hurst, cradle style engine mounts....scored a few huge fender washers from Grainger to make the hockey puck sandwich.
I posted this in another thread but hey it fits here and if anyone missed it there it is here...What is it? My 1929 Ford Sport coupe has a 1936 ford dash with no glove box. I could buy a press board aftermarket but that would be too easy so I use my acquired knowledge, skills and tools and garaged it. I had to mod the corner due to fouling on inner gas tank. Tool/Material List... 1) 1/8" (#30) Soft aviation rivets, Some hand (hammer) peened and others pneumatic "C" Squeezer with applicable 1/8" snaps/dies 2) Pop rivets 3) Soft Aluminum from metal store 4) Beverly shear and tin snips 5) Files-Round/Flat 6) Sharpie marker 7) Bristol board/tape/scissors for pattern 8) Vise with round bar and square bar for forming 9) Broken pilot aviation burnish tool for engine turning 11) Clecos 10) Drill Press 12) Drill gun with #30 bits and (5/32" and 1/4" for slots 13) Measuring Tape and 6"scale 14) 100 degree 6 flute countersink for deburring and touch csking 15) sand paper 240 -600 grit with aluminum polish 16) Patience, time and some good tunes Now I just have to get it in
we just did this thread less than a month ago, didn't we? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/home-or-hand-made-parts-no-price-tags.767484/ .
I think that we start threads like this all the time then they get buried and someone else comes along and wants to either show or see everyone's handiwork. I would personally like to think that for the most part we are not checkbook hot rodders, I know that this is not true but our core group at least is not entirely 1 800 hot rod. I got a one piece hood almost completely welded up from my A bone, it stated out like this: Went to this Then this and is currently a little farther along than this: Life is sort of in the way right now but maybe I can finish welding it and grind it out soon, like before next week soon. Its not a rotlieb or any of the other one piece hoods but out of necessity is has become what it is.
Gott do some fine tuning to them but I built the motor mounts for the 259 stude in my tudors chassis out of a 40 axle. used the rest of the axle making a drop out trans cross member, more cross members to follow...
Cool. We made a front cross member for an A roadster pickup out of the center arc from an A axle once. Old axles make good car parts of you have them. Creative.
Search is all in the wording...sometimes it is grammar related homemade or home-made or home - made Depending on length of thread breaking it up might be a good thing...Oh well missed on this one
Not again haven't we been through this before? LOL Here thy this on for size I think they don't show up here rather. http://jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-southern-employment-special-insanity101.1001953/page-4
Doubt it...could be the way your inputting them to your thread. I upload rather than drag and drop. Try edit/delete all those that don't work and re upload the same pics. Then go have some ho made pie . This (ho made pie) translated means a beer...
Thanks for posting stuff!! Never thought about using an axle for a crossmember. Very cool! Same scrap aluminum bar.. Used to make a fuel block.. Could be done easily in a drill press.. 1/8" pipe threads on all ports.. Then pipe to compression fittings Rolled and welded gauge panel
When I built my Phantom 33 Fordor Vicky Convertible I wanted accessible storage ( Trunk ) so I used the Rear part of the original Roof for the Rear Body Panel for the Opening and Dissected a Coupe Decklid to fit the opening , I cut the inner panel into 3 pieces and fitted the to the new opening then made an outer skin to fit.
Work in progress. Parking/brake/signal lights to hang off the back of a 54 F100 I'm working on. Housing made from cylinder caps, guts from an old set of trailer lights, lenses from motorcycle turn signals. . Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
My son and I am building a thirty’s speedster, probably over 80 percent so far is hand fabricated, the problem, the chassis rails that are titled are from a 1974 Postal Jeep so I would have to get special dispensation from Ryan to post the build, I can probably post some sub assembly pics but then again it’s not a traditional build.
Had some fuel issues with trying to gravity freeing the stock tank.. So making a small 5.5 gal tank to go underneath and use an inline pump out of it.. Start Little lathe work on some round stock Bungs for the fittings is what the round stock turned into Ran some pieces through the mill to fit them inside.. Forgot to take into account over lapping pieces.. Makes for a nicer fit then trying to grind it down with a grinder Time to weld And now we have a tank to pressure check today..
This is a one piece coil bracket support that bolts to the 49-53 Ford/Merc water pump. By remounting the stock 49-53 coil, it gives both your stock and aluminum heads a “clean, uncluttered” look as the stock coil no longer is bolted to the head. This is especially useful when installing early heads on the 49-53 Ford/Merc engine. Your stock 49-53 Ford/Merc coil bracket bolts to this support with two ¼-20 machine screws. This MIG welded bracket is of sturdy construction and is made of ¼ inch cold rolled steel. The bracket comes with a protective coat of red Rustoleum enamel which you can repaint to match the color of your engine. I'll make one for you if you want.
I think you can tell what part this is. For when you don't have a plasma cutter and are out of gas in the torch.....
Needed to stiffen up the steering on a 32 I picked up so cut this out of some scrap box tubing Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
