I have seen lifter dia. reduced on two of the lifters to clear. Lifter speed also is achieved with a radius ground on the lifter face...... like 20 inch Second by grinding a slight angle on the cam lobes nose.

 

Jim, use an A gasket and remember to plug the four steam holes in your B block.

up Close and personal with Tod Buttermore's new head. He was nice enough to send me his 1st head to beat up on and put it through its paces.


Looks like my old Thomas head will be getting sold to buy one of these heads.

Im a newbee but not newbee enough to want to run a stock A head on a B motor. Options right now are a Simmons or the winfield Tod is making. Would blocking those holes up have an effect if I went back to a "B" head?

 

no expert here , but we used to tap for allen head screws (or set screws) , flush fit & seal them for later removable .

 

The question is.... would there be a reason to reverse the process? I assume you are giving up coolants flow to Improve gasket life? Are you then risking overheating in a more cruising type car? Or is there really not much of an effect on cooling?

 

I have permanently plugged all four of the "extra" holes in the last two B locks I've built. No negative effects.

I tapped the holes for a 5/16" set screw, bottomed out the set screw so that it was just under the surface of the deck, then filled it in with JB weld and filed it flush.

only reason would be to use a "B" head again . I thought you were wanting to reverse it later .

I never put my B engine together and it didn't come with a head.
I know lots of guys plug the holes but could one just drill the head and use a B gasket.

My Thomas head I need to use a B gasket. Or at least that's what the guy I got it from said. I never questioned it and never had a problem

I am 100% on board with plugging the holes. It just turning the top of your B block into a A block and you would never have a problem with that. My thinking ford never did more work just for fun. Some call them steam holes. So why not drill the 4 holes in the head and make the A head into a B head.

 

Does anyone repop the intake linkage?

More time then money and you will end up with something nicer in the end

 

I got one of those intake linkages with the Ansen intake that I bought from Red's Headers a year ago. Not sure if they sell the linkage separately.

 

Kinda my point, I see them on repop intakes but was wondering if someone knew a place that sold just the linkage. If I still had the one in the photo, it would be simple. I sold all my stuff a year ago and am getting back into it.

BCCHOPIT if I had your metal skill I would make it easy. I don't even have a set of torches.... That said, anyone have the measurements for one? I have another Burns but no linkage. This is the third one I have owned.... hanging on to this one.
